Today is really simple: What do we all want out of life?

What is the actual reason why we are musicians?

Why do we do anything in life?

Why do we pursue anything in life?

Because we believe that it will bring us fulfillment.

Because we believe it will bring us happiness.

Because we believe it will bring us certainty.

Today I simply wanted to show you how to find these things when you can't get them through your musical instrument.

Imagine you are playing a show, and a SKATEBOARD hits your instrument while it is on your face! Such was the case with renowned Broadway trumpeter, Raul Agraz recently while playing in a Broadway pit orchestra.

Sometimes injury happens due to physiology mishaps, some through overuse. Some are due to traumatic experiences with our body, like Raul. Regardless of the cause, injury requires a LOT of patience, which Raul cites as his main tool to getting through his injury recovery.

Today I am sharing one of the strategies I have adopted in my personal life to help me stay FOCUSED on my GOALS. 

You have to FEED your SOUL with things that UPLIFT you, not take you down. 

No matter if you are going through injury or not, our mind OUTPUTS a reflection of our INPUT. 

How we use the tools we have can determine how mentally equipped we are to reach our DREAMS, even down to how we use social media.

This may be the most IMPORTANT interview I have done YET. 

As much as we all want to keep playing our instruments and recover, the reality for some people is that it may not happen for them. 

Some of you may decide that your injury is the end of a BEAUTIFUL chapter of your life.

That is OK.

Listen with me as Dr Brian Harker shares his TEN YEAR JOURNEY through trying to navigate issues with the nerves in his teeth as a budding jazz trumpet player, and how he eventually found FULFILLMENT through musicology and jazz history.

How much is your IDENTITY tied to your instrument? Join me as Frankie goes deep into what he was able to do to navigate his injury recovery and how it affected his identity! Listen as Frankie and I discuss the physics and physiology of the breath for brass playing. This became a career saver for him when he had to learn it due to an overuse injury that occurred very soon after he won a job with the Western Australia Symphony Orchestra! He shares with us the research that he has done with renowned physician Dr. Bronwen Ackermann, with whom he created Brass Rehab, an organization committed to educating about brass injury and recovery, as well as his own new project with a fellow musician called The Embouchure Project, a PODCAST about research surrounding brass playing and injury.

Imagine preparing for a major performance, and you get hit with a major injury! Savannah Jones (@sav.plays.piano) joins Trust the Process as the first non-brass musician, and first collegiate guest of the show.

Today I share my story with injury as a collegiate trumpeter, that is STILL ONGOING. I share how before my injury, I did not honor the needs of REST and RECOVERY that my body had, and paid the price, losing out on international tours, teaching opportunities, recording sessions, and many other things.

BUT...

I also share how my FAITH gave me the CLARITY we ALL can have during an injury, regardless of belief system. I share the lessons I have learned, and why I was motivated to start this podcast. 

We can't rush recovery, or growth, just like a tree growing slowly but surely EVERY DAY.
