Fearless Speech, Responsibility, Freedom & The Possibility of Being Wrong

A trained Steiner Kindergarten and class teacher and an education campaigner since the late 1990s, his books on education include Too Much, Too Soon? – Early Learning and the Erosion of Childhood; Childhood, Well-being and a Therapeutic Ethos (co-ed. Del Loewenthal); and Pushing Back to OFSTED.  His books on psychotherapy include In, Against and Beyond Therapy, Therapy Beyond Modernity, Critically Engaging CBT and Against and For CBT (both of the latter co-edited with Del Loewenthal).

Richard was a founder-member of the ‘Open EYE’ Campaign, Early Childhood Action, and the Save Childhood Movement. He contributed regularly to a range of professional education publications, and to the peer-reviewed and professional psychotherapy literature. 

More recently he has been writing critical press and magazine articles on the covid ‘pandemic’ and mass vaccination. Richard organised the three Daily Telegraph Open Letters on the state of modern childhood in 2006, 2007 (both with Sue Palmer) and in 2011. 

Particular current interests include: the capture of modern culture by biomedicine; the ‘audit culture’ and ‘toxic childhood’; the scientificity of mass vaccination; the authoritarian nature of modern science and technological transhumanism; and the psychodynamics of learning, teaching, play and pedagogy. His latest book (written with Thomas Hardtmuth MD), Beyond Mainstream Medicine: Dialogue towards a New Paradigm for Health, will be published in August. 

I’ve known Richard for some time in the Humanistic Psychology world.  I am deeply inspired by his commitment to ‘doing the right thing’, acting on what matters most for the good of all.  All with a humungous intelligence and untiring energy for inquiry, exploration, creation and articulation of his profound insights into the nature of human life.  He’s also a lovely man full of generosity and wit!

Blame, Accountability, Facilitating Growth & Building Resilience

In this episode my friend and ‘podcast buddy’ Reuben Wachs interviews me.   We explore how I came to be the coach and facilitator I am today, and the part played by my early childhood exposure to bohemian alternative living.  We discuss resilience - what it is, why it’s especially important today, and how we might develop it.  This is a lovely episode for anyone who would like to understand more of the ‘hidden secrets’ of humanistic psychology.

Reuben started his career working in music, running underground music events of over 2,500 people. He spent 8 years Djing around England and Europe and has played alongside legendary acts such as Moodyman, Peggy Gou and The Shapeshifters. 

Reuben is now training as a counsellor, specialising in psychodynamic, person centred and existential therapy. Reuben’s personal favourite approach to therapy is called Internal Family Systems, which is a way of working with your internal parts to create lasting change in your patterns, feelings and behaviours. 

Reuben is an avid learner - last year completing his challenge of reading over 60 books during 2021. He decided last year to turn this passion for learning and sharing into a podcast where he explores and shares theories and concepts which he feels can most impact your life. So far Reuben has covered topics such as Transactional Analysis’ life scripts, Jungian Shadow work, Internal Family Systems and many other interesting and useful topics.

Soul, Healing, Love, Awakening & Doing the Right Thing

He has held over 1000 Healing Theatre events in doctor's offices, ashrams, living rooms, theatres, healing retreats, and hotel ballrooms.  Testimonials and scientific tests by top researchers prove it to be the most potent healing work ever measured.  Steve has done this with over 1200 people at a time, or as few as 1.

He lies in Highlands, North Carolina.  He sees clients and patients online, including doctors and practitioners who mentor with him. He posts Healing Art on Facebook, offers it as fine art, produces gallery shows, leads telepathic meditation groups and holds live events.  He has over 4000 Healing Drawings of participants plus 1000 drawings created during group interplay in the Invisible with each other and with the Great Lives.

Shame, Denial, Hope, Courage & Speaking Out

Tragically - at the age of 13 Madeleine was raped and tortured by two men.  She chose to forgive them, and after decades of silence, decided to speak out. Following the sharing of her story publicly on The Forgiveness Project’s website in 2014 she was approached by numerous women - and men - saying that reading her story gave them strength, hope, and a different perspective of what’s possible in their lives.  She has shared her story on TV, radio, at conferences, book events, schools and more.  In 2017 she published her memoir ‘Unbroken’. 

In 2018 she won the Amazing Strength award at the No. 1 Magazine Amazing Women Awards and later that year was asked to be the Patron for Say Women, a Scottish organisation offering safe accommodation and support to young women survivors of sexual abuse/rape who are homeless.  She is one of 50 Thrivers working with The Global Resilience Project to develop a resilience blueprint for others.  She is a two times TEDx speaker, a story teller for The Forgiveness Project and shares her story in prisons with their programme RESTORE.  In 2020, she was asked to be Patron for Justice Is Now, working to end the use of rape myths and victim blaming in the criminal justice system. Later that year she launched her podcast “Unbroken: Healing Through Storytelling” - and became an Ambassador for Freedom From Abuse.

I am inspired by Madeleine's extraordinary work - helping the wounded speak out and reclaim their sovereignty, their sense of self and their personal power.   There is much for leaders to learn from this amazing woman.

I loved Antony’s appearances on the Tom Woods Show.  His combination of intellectual brilliance, deep knowledge of economics and politics, and sensitivity to the human condition is delightful and thought provoking.  He’s also appealingly non-conformist, colourful and interesting.  His perspective is - I believe - a refreshing alternative to mainstream views - and as such, invaluable for leaders facing new and unpredictable challenges today.

Honour, Courage, Justice & Whistleblowing

In a 24-Year career in the British Army, he commanded an arctic warfare radio troop, a parachute squadron and 3rd Division Headquarters and Signal Regiment in Bosnia-Herzegovina and worked in Counter Terrorism and the Ministry of Defence, Whitehall.  And more.

His 15 years in commercial life culminated as Programme Director for GPT Limited, an Airbus Group subsidiary,  in a £1.96 billion project to modernise defence communications for the Saudi Arabian National Guard.  In 2010, he blew the whistle after discovering secret payments to ‘additional’ sub-contractors in the Cayman Islands. In 2021, GPT were fined £28M with £2.2M costs. The case resulted in criminal prosecutions, the complete overhaul of the Airbus Group Senior Management Team and the largest fine - £3.6B - ever imposed on a commercial company under a Deferred Prosecution Agreement.

He went on to co-found Whistleblowers UK in 2012, establish the whistleblowing programme at the Cambridge International Symposium on Economic Crime, and co-head significant national consultations.

He is a member of the British Standards Institute Standards Committee Panel on Whistleblowing Management Systems and a research panel advisory member for an ESRC research project on 'Transforming whistleblower experiences’.   He lectures internationally on whistleblowing and related topics, and appears on radio, webinars and TV.  

I love Ian's unapologetic and rambunctious stance that the truth will out and that this is the goal.   A true hero of our times.

Resolution, Love, Happiness & Wisdom

As a Senior Partner he spearheaded the pioneering US based executive coaching firm KRW International to the point of sale.  He led the Coaching Division of Mercer Delta Learning Center, providing  programmes for top execs in global corporations such as Time Warner and Novartis.

Openness, Presence, Big Ideas & the Power of the Unknown

Liberation, Empathy, Oneness and Who We Really Are

In 1970 before he began any of those activities, he attended a workshop with Douglas Harding, author of On Having No Head, and discovered who he really was.  We discuss what is meant by that in this episode.

The method Harding developed is called the Headless Way, a method for directly becoming aware of your innermost self.  Within a year or two Richard was giving workshops himself and, more than fifty years later, is still on the job.

Richard set up the Shollond Trust twenty five years ago, a UK charity for sharing the Headless Way.  It has an extensive website.  As well as writing books, making videos and giving workshops, Richard facilitates online groups where the experience of our true nature is shared and celebrated.

I invited Richard to join us for the first episode on this month’s theme ‘Big Ideas’ - because the whole question of who we really are, and the matter of how we perceive the world - are very big ideas - with the power to affect everything and all aspects of our lives.  Richard’s work with Harding’s Headlessness method is truly groundbreaking.  I am a deep admirer of his dedication to bringing this particular Big Idea to thousands of people worldwide.  Richard has great heart, generosity and selfless humility in his mission.  His experience, perspective and insight are of great value - especially for leaders today.
