David Beckham’s body art has been the subject of numerous stories in the celebrity fanzines. It has even warranted a chapter in a serious academic study published in the Cambridge University Press book. https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/abs/cambridge-companion-to-football/david-beckham-and-the-celebrity-phenomenon/4888485C73DC8B1F08594875880936E9
The Cambridge Companion to Football. David Beckham and the Celebrity Phenomenon.
In chapter 9, David Beckham and the Celebrity Phenomenon, the author Jed Novick writes
He is the ultimate billboard – from Manchester to Madrid to Milan to LA; he’s even turned his tattooed body into a canvas when Naomi Klein wrote in 1999 how celebrities now mirror the corporate structure of corporations like Nike and Gap And how the processes of commodification have become so ubiquitous and commonplace that the idea of unbranded space has become almost unthinkable. She could’ve been writing Beckham‘s career plan.
A more recent interview with the artist responsible for the masterpiece reveals that it that now amounts to 130 tattoos which are still on display all over the world on the Beckham epidermis, and on numerous fake Beck pecs ...

The Odd Couple: A case study of gaslighting?
This podcast summarises a case study of the working relation of a broadcasting team and in particular of its two lead broadcasters whose names I have described as Kenneth and Barbie.
Their story reminds me of examples of teams from real life and fiction, including the one made famous in the film The Odd Couple, brilliantly played by Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.
Another humorist and actor Steve Cooghan mocked the morning chat show displays of harmonious teamwork, in his TV series Mid-Morning Matters. He portrayed his fictional persona Alan Partridge as insensitive male, unaware of the crushing impact is he having on all around him. This piece of comedy brilliance works partly because of its dark undertones.
I became increasingly reminded the Cooghan treatment in the behaviour of a pair of real-life broadcasters sharing a morning programme of news, entertainment, guests and phone-in calls. So much so, that I began to see their developing relationship as a performance concealing those darker elements revealed in Cooghan’s fictional relationships ...

The Invention of solitude, by Paul Auster
I began an obituary of Paul Auster who died earlier this month, describing how I discovered this book among the disorder of my bookshelves. The slim volume turned up, apparently unread, fresh from purchase at a time before the instant gratification of an Amazon purchase was possible.
In the days that followed, I have read the book initially to engage with what one reviewer had described as ‘a remarkable sustained piece of writing: beneath Auster's controlled tone – literary, cerebral– the passion and anguish are finely mediated’.
Auster’s memoir remains painfully relevant today. Its journey explores the sudden death of his father’s life in part one, ‘Portrait of an Invisible man’ , and the subsequent sense made of it in part two, ‘The book of memory’. It is also a fascinating glimpse into an author’s creative battle to arrive at the final product.

Paul Auster, my newspaper tells me, died yesterday. So it must be true. But almost everything I know about the American author is shrouded in doubt.
I am almost sure I read his masterpiece the New York trilogy. I look, but can’t find it in the forest of my bookshelves. I only remember me as reader trying to make sense of three puzzling stories in which someone who appears to be a detective also tries to make sense of three puzzling stories.
What I did find was another book by Paul Auster entitled the invention of solitude. I take it from the shelves. This paperback edition tells me it was first published in 2012. It is dusty but giving off clues that it has never been opened and read.
I look inside. I do not recognise what I am reading. I have not read a single word before ...

A sword attack, heroism, and knee-jerk exceptionalism.
Wednesday May 1 2024
Yesterday, an apparently maniacal sword attack in a peaceful London suburb resulted in the death of a teenage boy, and injuries to bystanders.
Media coverage was inevitably lurid, even by the standards of current reporting of state-sponsored bloodshed around the world.
Students of journalism would do well to study the skills of attention-grabbing headlines this morning.
Unusually, it is not easy to identify the newspaper from the headlines.

One or two of my correspondents on twitter have suggested that I preach the gospel here more often, rather than be political.
So, today the first reading at mass was the story of Philip baptising the Ethiopian eunuch from Acts 8. We therefore celebrate the fact that a non-binary, black, African was baptised into the church long before anyone in England was Christian, and we remember that the outpouring of the grace of God is not limited by our prejudices.
Amen.

I am possessed. How I became a slave to my new iPhone
A cry from the heart. A short while ago, I was a reasonably functioning human being, capable of independent thought and action... then I acquired my new iPhone.
It replaced my ancient model, which was showing all the functions of a deteriorating piece of hardware. After great hesitation, I plunged into buying the Apple 15 phone, allegedly the much-improved version of my existing product.
The transfer was easy-peasy, or so, my fellow members of the Apple cult assured me. Unassured, I took their advice.
I will spare you details of the purchase and transfer of vital information from my old phone. I now realise I have fallen into a diabolical plot, which renders me helpless against forces that threaten to ruin my life.
