Last week, the Maricopa County Democratic headquarters were firebombed and totally destroyed. That's a national story because, Maricopa County is the largest battleground county in the nation. If the race for the Presidency comes down to Arizona's 11 electoral votes, Joe Biden doesn't win without Maricopa County turning blue. If the majority for the US Senate hangs in the balance, Mark Kelly can't be the tipping point if Maricopa County doesn't turn out Democratic voters.
That responsibility -- and no pressure here -- falls to Steven Slugocki, Chair of the Maricopa County Democratic Party. Steven takes us on his days surrounding the firebombing and a major county Democratic convention scheduled the day after. Steven, his staff, county precinct committee captains and 20 legislative district chairs go from total damage to total commitment within 48 hours.
In that time, there has been an outpouring of support and financial aid from county Democrats, state leaders and officials, from around the country and even from conscientious Republicans.
This podcast is different. It's purpose is to raise additional funds for the recovery of the Maricopa County Democratic Party. Please contribute at: https://maricopadems.org/recoveryfund

Former US House Speaker Tip O'Neill said, "All politics are local." It doesn't get more "local" than the race for Maricopa County Treasurer. And it doesn't have a more qualified and experienced candidate than Dan Toporek, Democrat. In Dan's 34 years in the military, responsible for millions in Pentagon programs, he learned to be a "good steward of the people's money."
Dan shows real foresight in realizing the office and the county faces tremendous challenges in the loss of sales tax from the state and reduced returns on county investments as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting downturn in the economy.
Perhaps, no other local office has a more direct impact on the pocketbook issues of citizens because it collects property taxes, sales tax, business fees and motor vehicle fees. We all need to pay more attention to these down ballot, local elections.

Episode 3 is all about the details of politics -- called the "ground game." That's where elections are won and lost. My three guests have decades of experience in Arizona's Democratic ground game of voter registration, organizing precincts, phone banks and get-out-the-vote campaigns. Each one is the administrator or head of an Arizona-based Facebook group or Democratic committee.
Tom Elliott leads the Arizona LD8 Democrats Newschat; Ralph Atchue is Chair of the Democrats of Casa Grande, AZ and Patricia Thomas leads the Indivisible Phoenix West Group. A visit to their organizations reveals the hard work of politics in Arizona.
