What's the overarching purpose of your life? What are the things that are most important to you in this lifespan that you have right now? It's kind of like when you do a strategic plan: you start with a vision and mission. Why am I doing this in the first place? And what does it look like when I'm successful? Those are vision and mission ideas. The priority list is fun. Don't make it arduous or difficult, and there may be overlapping ideas here or there, but don't worry about it. It's not so precise that if you accidentally state something in a way that sounds more like a goal, or the goal sounds more like a priority, you can play with it. It's your life.
But the way I look at it, I notice that organizations that hold together have a sense of purpose. Looking in the United States, even if it appears to be going to hell in a handbasket right now, at least they know that it is because they have a constitution. It's written. I've seen it. It's in Washington, D.C., in the Library of Congress. It's on the wall. Somebody took the time. There was a conference. People came together, really smart people, and they said, "What do we want?" And they wrote it all down. They wrote it as they thought about it, and they wrote it as precisely as possible about what a good country would look like, what their main goals and priorities for the country, right ?
Before that, there was the Magna Carta, where people said, "I don't like the way our lives are going, so let's talk about what we really want to do." They wrote it down. So the way I conceive of it is, each one of us has our own life to organize, and what better way to organize than to have your own constitution? Would you like to write a constitution and put it on the wall? And then if somebody says, "Hey, how about let's do this," you can say, "How about let's not," because it's not in the constitution, unless you want to write an amendment to the constitution. That way you're self-guided. And if you're not self-guided, then somebody else will just take over your life, and part of that will just be fear. You're afraid to do certain things, or you're guilty because you're not doing enough.
But the more you're able to decide on what's most important to you and write it down and decide what your own life is going to be, I really do recommend making a constitution and putting it on your wall. Then you can say, "This is how I live, this is what's most important to me."
