Kristia Leyendecker had been teaching AP Psychology for eight years.  She had a working knowledge and understanding about gender and gender dysphoria and  considered herself open minded.  She felt that we should let people be people, it wasn’t her business to judge the way another person lives their life.  But, it wasn’t until last year, when her 16 year old male child came out as transgendered that she began to find out the impact of what it means to be transgendered.

If you pay any attention to the news, you probably know that anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced in 33 states since 2021… and that in Florida specifically this legislation has been Dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay bill”  but formally known as the “Parental Rights in Education” bill, the text of the legislation states that “classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through [third grade]” or “in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards” in other grades.

Further, it explicitly states that parents “may bring an action against a school district to obtain a declaratory judgment” and a court may award damages and attorney’s fees if it finds that a school violated the measure.  Our guest today is someone that I actually know.  We taught at the same school, although our paths did not cross very often as a kindergarten teacher and fifth-grade teachers.  Cory was a well-respected teacher and was well-loved by staff and students alike.  To quote Cory himself he said, “I have been stricken with fear over how Florida’s new law limiting discussions of LGBTQ+ discussions in school will affect me as a person and a professional.  Cory has since appeared on a live interview on 10Tampa Bay MSNBC and was on HBO’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and did an op-ed for NBC and we are so excited to hear his story and learn his thoughts.

We are so excited to have had the opportunity to interview Assistant Principal, Joshua Stamper. He is the first administrator we've been able to interview, and it is well worth the listen. 

Joshua Stamper initially used his artistic talent, creativity, and original ideas as a professional graphic designer. He then transitioned to inspiring students to utilize their imagination and creative expression in public education. Being unsuccessful as a student growing up, Joshua never expected to be back in the classroom as a teacher, athletic coach, or administrator. His struggles as a student spawned a passion to change the education model, push the boundaries of traditional learning, and explore new innovative ideas. Joshua has been a middle school Assistant Principal in North Texas for the past eight years, where he's served at four campuses in two school districts.

In addition to his current administrative position, Joshua is the host of Aspire: The Leadership Development Podcast, an author, leadership coach, education presenter, and Podcast Network Manager for the Teach Better Team. 

Joshua is married to Leslie and the father of five. Joshua and Leslie became foster parents in 2011 and had the privilege of adopting three of their children from foster care. Joshua and Leslie are trained in trauma-informed practices for meeting the emotional, social, and behavioral needs of children who have been through adverse childhood experiences, which Joshua also applies to his role as administrator.
