It is allotment time, and teachers are vying for certain grades/contents to teach. It can get ugly, ya'll! They touch on how The Rock is making a Hallmark movie, Kim's potentially ill-fated biking hobby, and what Jen will talk about in a room full of non-teachers during her training for her new job.
Hopefully, you are all staying TWISTED!

If you have been in the education world for a minute and taught writing, chances are high that you know of Ralph Fletcher. He is the author of Craft Lessons, Writing Workshop: The Essential Guide, and What a Writer Needs. Not only does he write books for teachers, but he has also written picture books, and chapter books-one which is one of Jen's favorite read alouds-Flying Solo, He has written books for young adults and poetry books.

We were thrilled to have the opportunity to talk to Ralph, but we are saddened that this interview came about because one of his poetry books: A Writing Kind of Day is being challenged in Franklin County, VA schools because of his poem Bill of Sale that is included in that book. Someone came before their board asking that it be banned-saying that the last line encouraged white children to commit suicide.

We talked about book bannings and all things writing. We really could not be prouder of this episode. Kim Eversole and I were both in tears at the end when we reflected on the interview. Go and live a writing kind of life.

Ralph has some new resources he would like to share:

  1) Get Focused. This is a series of videos produced by Heinemann in which I speak directly to kids. These short videos (about 5 or 6 minutes long) are like mini-lessons. In the end I send the kids off to write. I think teachers will enjoy having high-quality writing instruction they can plug in to their own instruction. Here's the link:

 https://www.heinemann.com/products/e13524.aspx

 2) New picture book--The World's Loneliest Elephant. I've attached the cover. It's about Kaavan, who was locked in a Pakistan zoo for 35 years. Many people---ordinary citizens and celebs like "the" Cher--worked together to get him released. I'll attach the cover. The illustrator did a fabulous job. This picture book is coming out in late summer.

 3) New edition of A Writer's Notebook. (See attached cover)  I have added seven new chapters (including "Writing in the Digital Age") to update the book. This book will come out next January

Jen talks about her tornado drill/lockdown experience with her 5th-grade class. Kim gets us up to date on the field day plans at the high school. Instead of a cakewalk, they tossed around the idea of a 'vape' walk but soon realized that would be inappropriate. Kim wants doctors' offices to use better pens, and Jen gives her opinion about Will Smith and his choices. At the end of the day, we should all realize that we are freaking unicorns.
Have a wonderful weekend, and stay TWISTED ya'll!

Jen and Kim revisit all the elements of education that can only be described as Pervasive Grossness. It's a recipe calling for a cup of imposter syndrome,  a gallon of toxic positivity, a large sprinkling of unrealistic mandates, and 100 tablespoons of a continued lack of support.

Just an end-of-the-week check-in. Kim talks about her obsession with Noodles the Pooch. Jen tells a tale of how you should never hide children during a fire drill to see if the teachers will notice.

Jen and Kim had a great time talking to Andrea Michelle.  You most likely know her as educatorandrea. Andrea is a high school English teacher-English 9 and 10 to be precise. On top of being a teacher-She has quite a social media presence.  With almost 12,000 followers on Instagram, over 76,000 followers on TikTok, and even a Youtube channel.  She has an amazing store that you will have to checkout as well. Seriously, if you are looking for gifts for a teacher…you have to check it out.  Andrea is staying in education and we are so excited to hear her story hopefully, we will inspire some other educators to stay as well.

Oh my! Kim and Jen are getting ready to tackle some serious topics, so just talk about random shit for levity. Kim talks about her impulsive offer to plan a high school field day, and Jen tells us about why one should never eat sugar-free gummy bears. They also cover an unfortunate event that occurred with a blow-up doll.
Enjoy the week, laugh, and stay twisted!
