Mike McCarthy is beginning to define what Steelers football will look like under his leadership.
After Day 2 of training camp at Saint Vincent College, Latrobe Bulletin sports editor Anthony DiCerbo and sports writer Nathan Schivins break down McCarthy’s “Steeler Six” — the six fundamentals he considers non-negotiable — and explain how those priorities appeared throughout a longer, more situational practice.
The first-team offense delivered one of the day’s biggest moments when Aaron Rodgers led a successful two-minute drive and connected with DK Metcalf for a contested touchdown against rookie cornerback Daylen Everette. The second-team drill ended differently, with Sebastian Castro intercepting Will Howard on the final play of practice.
Anthony and Nathan also discuss the learning curve facing rookies Germie Bernard and Riley Nowakowski, including the challenge of adjusting to Rodgers’ pre-snap signals and expectations. Bernard mixed a false start with several encouraging plays, while Howard showed positive moments before his late interception.
On special teams, Chris Boswell went 5-for-5 on field-goal attempts and finished from 54 yards, while Cameron Johnston drew an enthusiastic response from the crowd during his punting work.
The episode closes with Broderick Jones’ encouraging return from injury, his work to regain football conditioning and the importance of a healthy training camp for the former first-round pick. The crew also looks ahead to Monday, when the pads come on and McCarthy’s gradual approach to physicality enters its next stage.
