“Because I wanted to.”

“Arrested again” is one of those phrases that instantly triggers a hot take. We slow it down and trace the real path from cuffs to court, because the gap between arrest and release is where most people’s assumptions live. I’m a working police sergeant, and I’m not interested in easy villains. I want to know what protects the public, what gives victims a meaningful response, and what protects an accused person who hasn’t been proven guilty.

We walk through the nuts and bolts of the criminal justice system: the probable cause arrest affidavit, the jail sergeant’s review, the first judge’s bond decision, and the reality that probable cause to arrest is a lower standard than proof beyond a reasonable doubt at trial. We also talk street-level case building that actually holds up later: preserving body cam video, taking injury photos the right way, documenting intent and offense elements, confirming identity with solid identifiers, and avoiding the trap of building a story in your head before the evidence is in.

Then we go where the accountability conversation usually gets awkward: courts. If police are expected to operate under transparency and scrutiny, what checks and balances exist for judges and prosecutors when release decisions go sideways? We brainstorm a practical reform a public transparency portal that shows who decided what, what was known at the time, what the law allowed, and the reason for releasing or detaining someone. We also tackle cash bail and fairness, plus tools like ankle monitors when jails are overloaded. He lost both legs. His commitment to serve never changed.

Roberto Ortiz joins Two Cops One Donut for a conversation about policing in Mexico, surviving catastrophic injuries, rebuilding his life, and choosing to continue serving.

During a police operation in April 2022, Roberto was struck by a vehicle at a roadside checkpoint after responding to the deaths of fellow officers. He shares his account of the incident, the injuries that cost him both legs above the knee, and being turned away by hospitals while desperately needing emergency treatment. 

But surviving was only the beginning.

Roberto opens up about the mental battle of going from the person protecting others to the person who needed help. He discusses his wife’s role in his recovery, the teammates who stood beside him, and returning to law enforcement in an intelligence role. His story is about more than learning to walk again. It is about rebuilding his identity, supporting his family, and finding a new way to fulfill his purpose. 

Erik Lavigne and the TCOD crew explore Roberto’s experiences with organized crime, the challenges facing Mexican police officers, and what real leadership looks like when someone on your team needs support. The conversation also tackles mental health, asking for help, and remembering the human being behind the badge.

Flock cameras and other automated license plate readers can help police solve serious crimes fast. But when police leaders defend that technology by warning citizens about murdered loved ones, kidnapped children, missing family members, or crimes that supposedly will not be solved without it, the conversation starts looking a lot more like fear than public safety.

A single road sign might not look like much, until a judge treats it as the line between lawful speech and criminal trespass. We walk through the Long Island Audit conviction step by step, focusing on the part that actually decides the case: implied license and whether a “Private Road” warning is enough notice to cancel the normal privilege to walk up a driveway and knock. It’s less internet drama and more a tight property law and criminal law question with big real world consequences for homeowners, delivery drivers, and anyone filming in public interest.

From there, we get into the “journalist” label and why it’s not a magic pass. In the United States, journalism is usually defined by the work, not by a badge or a network, but claiming “I’m the press” does not erase trespass laws. That nuance matters if you care about First Amendment rights, police accountability, and keeping your content on the right side of the law.

We also pivot hard into credibility and body cameras after an ICE officer is charged with lying about a shooting.
