SEMO Athletics has announced the 2020 Athletics Hall of Fame Class. Lance Brune was a four-year football letterman at SEMO, where he started at quarterback from 1970-73. Brune, at one time during his career, set or tied seven school records. After graduation, he signed as a free agent with the NFL's St. Louis Cardinals. The Ohio Valley Conference Board of Presidents announced last Friday that fall competition and championships in the sports of football, men's and women's cross country, women's soccer and women's volleyball will be postponed due to the concerns and uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. In making its determination, the Board asked the conference membership to develop plans for conference competition and championships in the spring semester for the impacted sports. Five Southeast Missouri head coaches were recently awarded contract extensions following a successful 2019-20 season that included four Ohio Valley Conference titles and three NCAA berths. Head football coach Tom Matukewicz received a six-year extension. Women’s basketball coach Rekha Patterson received a five-year extension. Volleyball coach Julie Yankus and women’s soccer coach Heather Nelson each received a three-year extension, and baseball coach Andy Sawyers received two additional years.

The academic honors continue to pour in for Redhawk student-athletes and teams. The SEMO Baseball team received the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award. SEMO is one of only 64 NCAA Division I programs in the country to earn this distinction, and one of only two Ohio Valley Conference teams. Several Redhawk teams were honored recently by coaches associations for their outstanding performances in the classroom last school year. SEMO's men's and women's track and field teams claimed U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic honors for the 2019-20 school year.
