We continue our conversation with Emmy Cook from last week (Episode 124, released June 22, 2018). In this half, Pastor Beth and Emmy talk about the pain of widowhood and how faith has helped them manage the pain. Emmy reveals how she navigates life with grace and how she seeks to pass her faith onto the next generation.

Pastor Beth had a beautiful conversation with Pastor Michael’s mother-in-law, Emmy Cook. Emmy’s story begins in Indonesia, moves to Holland and then to the United States. Beth and Emmy weave their thoughts together about family, pain, love and loss.

Pastor Michael is getting married tomorrow (June 16, 2018)! Pastor Beth is officiating the wedding and she takes this opportunity to talk to him about how he is feeling as the day approaches. Their conversation meanders around the gifts and challenges of officiating weddings and the joys of walking beside couples as they covenant with one another.

Pastors have honed a skill to differentiate themselves from the people around them. This skill enables them to be present and compassionate in any situation. Pastors Michael and Beth both exercised this skill as chaplains at trauma one hospitals (Level I trauma centers) as part of their training. Today they talk about their experiences of reading a room and figuring out how to not “make it about them.”

A good comedian has the ability to separate the sacred from the object and then talk about it, poke at it, and make fun of it. The two pastors admit to not being funny but knowing funny, and they believe funny has the power to save us.
