River Sing Me Home by Eleanor Sheaker

This rich historical fiction story takes place in Barbardos at the time of the Emancipation Act of 1834. When Rachel learns her freedom will not be free, but rather, she will still be bound to work on the plantation which she runs. This begins a treacherous journey to find the five children she birthed and were sold. For, no mother can truly be free without knowing where all her children are.

The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan

In this dystopian novel, mothers who feel like they're being judged against an impossible standard (a.k.a everyone) will relate to Frida who, after a moment of bad judgement, has to prove to the government that she deserves custody of her daughter, Harriett.  Frida loses custody of her daughter and is sent to a prison-like institution where she and other "bad parents" — mostly mothers — are taught to become successful parents.  A wry look at the impossible standards of "the perfect mother."
