    The Last Word

Book recommendations from Debbie Scheller that would make great Mother’s Day gifts, and that you can pick up at A Likely Story in Sykesville, MD

    Fiction:

River Sing Me Home by Eleanor Sheaker

This rich historical fiction story takes place in Barbardos at the time of the Emancipation Act of 1834. When Rachel learns her freedom will not be free, but rather, she will still be bound to work on the plantation which she runs. This begins a treacherous journey to find the five children she birthed and were sold. For, no mother can truly be free without knowing where all her children are.

The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan

In this dystopian novel, mothers who feel like they're being judged against an impossible standard (a.k.a everyone) will relate to Frida who, after a moment of bad judgement, has to prove to the government that she deserves custody of her daughter, Harriett.  Frida loses custody of her daughter and is sent to a prison-like institution where she and other "bad parents" — mostly mothers — are taught to become successful parents.  A wry look at the impossible standards of "the perfect mother."

    Biography:

Honey Baby Mine by Laura Den & Diane Ladd

An instant classic of both motherhood and Hollywood life, this touching biography is told through a series of dialogues and remembrances in which these awarad-winning actresses explore their long-term mother/daughter relationship following Ladd's health-scare.

    Non-Fiction:

Tell Me More by Kelly Corrigan

A powerful book about seven phrases that make us a better person.  In “No,” she admires her mother’s ability to set boundaries and her liberating willingness to be unpopular. In “Tell Me More,” a facialist named Tish teaches her something important about listening. And in “I Was Wrong,” she comes clean about her disastrous role in a family fight—and explains why saying sorry may not be enough.

    For Fun:

Mom, Can I Do My Laundry at Your House?  by Olivia Roberts

A perfect gift for mom, this humor poetry book celebrates the mother/child relationship and how this relationship evolves as children grow up and become (or at least they try to be) independent adults.
