Now that we have reached the end of 2021 and year one and a half of this podcast, we give you highlights from some of the best podcast episodes of 2021.
The first is Episode 23 entitled 5 Key Public Sector Themes for 2021
In this episode, Meredith Trimble, Tyler Technologies’ editorial content manager, discusses how Tyler’s clients innovated in each of these five areas in scalable ways, even during the most challenging circumstances. She Finds inspirationin the stories illustrating the year’s top public sector themes. Here’s a little taste from Episode 23.
The next is Episode 25, called 5 Reasons to Use American Rescue Plan Funds to Support Data Infrastructure
with Tyler Kleykamp, director of the State Data Officers Network and fellow at Georgetown’s Beeck Center for Social Impact + Innovation, Tyler joined the podcast to discuss specific reasons why governments should use federal relief funds now to support data infrastructure.
Now up is Mark Funkhouser. Mark joined Jeff to talk about 5 Ways to Not Waste Stimulus Funds With Mark Funkhouser on Episode 26. Funkhouser’s key tips included investing in projects that may have significant upfront cost but will reduce future operating expenses, thinking beyond jurisdictional borders to pool resources for larger impact, and investing in cybersecurity to decrease risk.
Next we switch to school transportation and Episode 34. Tyler Technologies’ Kim Rentner, who is a thought leader in the school transportation space, interview Dr. Linda Bluth in an episode entitled, Transporting Students With Special Needs
Dr. Linda Bluth is with the Maryland State Department of Education, Division of Special Education/Early Intervention Services, and past-president, National Association for Pupil Transportation. Dr. Bluth details for listeners how alternative modes of transportation are important as districts consider the needs of students, parents, drivers, and communities at large and provides expert tips on how to articulate the benefits of alternative modes of transportation to stakeholders including parents.
Next up is Episode 35 which focuses on Connecticut’s Data-Driven Approach to Back to School. Tyler Tech podcast guest host Beth Amann interviews Pauline Zaldonis, a key member of the Connecticut Open Data team, to discuss data-driven work in the state of Connecticut. Zaldonis covers the basics of her state’s Open Data Portal as well as the success of cross-agency partnerships continuing to empower residents with the important public health information they need.
Our final highlight in the Best of is Episode 36 which focuses on the Benefits of the Cloud in the Public Sector Why is everyone talking about the cloud? The coronavirus pandemic accelerated new technology adoption as well as moves to the cloud for many public sector agencies, and even Tyler itself, which accelerated cloud development for some of its products. In this episode, Russell Gainford, Tyler’s vice president, cloud strategy & operations, provides an insider look at Tyler’s own cloud journey as well as specific reasons why public sector leaders should care about the cloud and how they can ensure their jurisdiction’s security, agility, and sustainability through cloud-enabled solutions.

Are virtual courts here to stay?
On January 1, 2020, the idea of a virtual court was almost science fiction for most municipal court administrators, but by April nearly every court in the country had set up some sort of remote hearing option in response to the pandemic. As social distancing requirements ease, is there still a need for this type of technology? According to subject matter experts Jonathan Lang and Marlin Jones, the answer is yes. Besides the challenges the pandemic created, finding childcare, reliable transportation, or even taking time off of work are some of the many challenges people face when seeking justice. Episode 43 looks at how virtual court platforms that offer more than just video conferencing are being used to solve this problem and creating a better solution for communities, constituents, and courts.
Jonathan Lang serves as the Product Manager for the Incode court suite. He is responsible for the overall direction and development of the products and services that Tyler provides to municipal courts across the country. Jonathan has been with Tyler since 2006. For his first nine years at Tyler, he worked as a project manager, specializing in implementation of the Incode court product for municipal courts of significant size. Before Tyler, Jonathan was in charge of technology for a health claims administrator and then worked as a production manager for a custom web development firm.
Marlin Jones is the product owner for the Incode court product. In this role, she works with our clients to identify and address business problems through the development of new software solutions, as well as, responsible for providing support with the direction of assigned products. Marlin relocated back to Texas after living in Atlanta, GA for 20+ years and she started with Tyler in February 2018. Marlin enjoys working closely with our court customers.

What happens when citizens of a state not only put the use of medical marijuana on the ballot, but also pass it in somewhat surprising fashion? Well, that’s exactly what happened in the state of Missouri a couple of years ago.
What are the licensing and regulatory implications? Who needs to be involved and what are the steps forward to best serve the citizens of the state? In this episode, we learn exactly what happened from the person who figured all that out.
Amy Moore is the Deputy Director and Counsel for the Medical Marijuana Regulatory Program at the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. She joined the program at its inception in December 2018. Before joining DHSS, she worked in public utility regulation at the Missouri Public Service Commission, first representing the Commission Staff in hearings before the Commission and then serving as legal counsel and policy advisor to Commissioner and Chairman Daniel Hall. Amy graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law in 2009 and holds bachelor’s degrees in Business and Psychology from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
And to speak with Amy on this topic, we have the perfect person here at Tyler, Alex Valvassori. Alex is the General Manager for Cannabis Licensing at Tyler Technologies. He has worked in the cannabis industry since 2014, serving as Chief Compliance Officer for a variety of cannabis businesses. Alex later co-founded Complia, the first and only cannabis-specific licensing technology platform on the market. In 2019, Complia was acquired by NIC, and Alex later joined the Tyler team via its acquisition of NIC. Alex resides in Chicago and is a graduate of the University of Illinois.

This episode is part of our series on school transportation and today we are talking specifically about Medicaid and Medicaid reimbursements for K-12 transportation services. Kim Rentner, our School Transportation subject matter expert here at Tyler, speaks with Casey Gayer.
Casey currently oversees Medicaid and special education program operations for Frontline Education’s partner districts nationwide. She received a BA in International Relations from UC Davis, with a focus on public policy. Casey's experience spans hundreds of districts across the country, making her a subject matter expert in both Medicaid and special education program rules and regulations. She also has experience working for a grants research firm, where she previously led a team of analysts that researched and published articles on Federal, State and foundation RFPs and congressional legislation that impacted local government funding.
