A regular wave of 0.75Hz frequency breaking on a sloping beach in the UCL Ocean Towing Tank, with Dr Kevin Drake on eight course renaissance lute, playing 'Mr Dowland's Midnight' by John Dowland (1563-1626).

One of my colleagues thought at first that I might have placed a pre-recorded lute track alongside the sound of breaking waves during multi-track editing. Please note that it was a live single track recording with me playing the lute beside the beach. Indeed, the repeated musical phrase at the ending was improvised on the basis of visual observation to synchronise the last chord with the last wave and then to follow through with a bass note.

A regular wave of 0.75Hz frequency breaking on a sloping beach in the UCL Ocean Towing Tank, with Dr Kevin Drake on eight course renaissance lute, playing 'Mr Dowland's Midnight' by John Dowland (1563-1626).

One of my colleagues thought at first that I might have placed a pre-recorded lute track alongside the sound of breaking waves during multi-track editing. Please note that it was a live single track recording with me playing the lute beside the beach.
