On this Episode, Caren Sullivan talks to artist Artist Orla Whelan.

Orla Whelan is a visual artist whose practice is rooted in painting. Her approach is to consider the visual language and materials of the medium as tools to reimagine contemporary possibilities for transcendence. She is motivated by an existential anxiety, and a belief that abstraction is a viable means to address metaphysical uncertainties. In addition to oil paint on linen, she uses non-traditional painting materials which refer to the materiality and tropes of painting.

These expanded forms include: wood veneers on panel, painted plywood wedges, modified furniture, colour pencil on paper and site responsive interventions that speak to the history and architecture of particular spaces. Orla frequently explores the role of writing within visual art practice by creating different author identities and experimental texts that challenge ideas of subjectivity, authorship and meaning.

Her current exhibition Coloured into Shapecontinues to12th October 2024 at Hillsboro Fine Art, Dublin. Recent solo exhibitions include Coloured by Weather at Custom House Gallery, Westport (2024) Glas, Gorm, Uaine at the Pearse Museum OPW, Dublin (2023), Magnum Chaos at Hillsboro Fine Art (2023), and I Don’t Need Anything From Here (magic-carpet-painting) at the RHA Gallery (2022). In 2021, Orla took part in Dubliners – The 6th Biennial of Painting in Zagreb, Croatia, in association with Pallas Projects.

Her work is held in the collections of The Arts Council of Ireland, The Crawford Art Gallery, The OPW State Art Collection, Trinity College Dublin, The Merrion Hotel, Kelly’s Hotel and private collections worldwide. Orla is founder and director of AtHomeStudios – a collective of visual artists working from studios based in their own homes, and the art publishing project Whale Dust. She lives in and works in Dublin, Ireland.

Francis is the founder of FuturumKids, a state-of-the-art animation and media company that specialises in producing, distributing and licensing thrown Ip for the global tv marketing.

The company comprises a multi-Emmy Award winning team of principals, with a major track record of global success. The company is a collaboration of the team that produced 7-time Emmy Award winning "Jakers!" and the successful HIT Entertainment Team that produced some of the world's most successful children's Francises including "Bob The Builder", "Barney" and "Thomas and Friends".

Their latest venture, is "Paddles!" a series about a baby polar bear delivered by mistake to Ireland.

On this episode, Caren Sullivan Talks to artist Shane Griffin in 2020.

Griffin grew up in Dublin, and relocated to New York City in 2012, where he recently set up his independent practice, GRIF Studio. Specializing in both art and commercial design, the studio works on diverse projects through a wide range of mediums.

The studio’s portfolio includes an impressive array of clients, from Apple to Nike to LG and more. What’s interesting to note is how Griffin’s personal projects and artwork inform his commercial pieces. 

One such project is his set of best spoke wallpapers created for the iPhone 8 launch. The work is based on his iconic personal series “Chromatic,” which explores light and color through mesmerizing large-scale visuals.

While Griffin’s artworks are often the starting point for commissioned design projects, he sees a clear distinction between the two.

“With art, it’s all about asking questions,” he notes. “You’re inviting the audience into your world and asking them a question about your subject matter. It creates this silent dialog of reflection and thought.”

Whether working on an immersive art installation, a campaign for Nike or a film for Givenchy, digital artist Shane Griffin maintains his iconic style. He crafts captivating, otherworldly scenes and experiences, bringing his artistic mindset to his commercial work. This niche approach is what gives the brands he collaborates with a unique and innovative edge.

On this episode, Caren Sullivan talks to artist Vanessa Donoso Lopez in 2020.

Vanessa Donoso López (born Barcelona, Spain) lives and works between Dublin and Barcelona. She studied at the School of Arts and Design Llotja, Barcelona, the University of Barcelona and the Winchester College of Art, UK. 

Vanessa's work develops within an installation process through a dialogical relationship between a variety of media and mechanisms including, drawing, painting, arqueological- scientific experimentation and repetitive object making. Her practice is committed to exploring concepts of transitional phenomena relevant to contemporary migrant life. It seeks to negotiate the tension between cross-cultural identities and narratives, its instability and complexity, its potential for the loss of identity, language, and the hypothetical compatibility with original cultures.

David Thomas Smith is a visual artist who specialises in Post- Photographic Processes.

David's work has been exhibited in several diverse locations around the world from the Gaîté Lyrique in Paris to the Hyundai Motor Studio in Beijing.

In 2017 David was nominated for one of photography's most prestigious awards The Prix Pictet.

David's work has also appeared in a variety of publications from Esquire, Russia to Wired in the United States and anthologies such as Robert Shore's: Post Photography - The Artist with a Camera. 

David Thomas Smith is a visual artist whose work interrogates the evolving relationship between technology, imagery, and the human experience. Engaging with Post-Photographic Processes, his practice explores how the digital realm reshapes our perception of reality, history, and memory. His work has been exhibited internationally, in venues from Gaîté Lyrique in Paris to Hyundai Motor Studio in Beijing, and he was nominated for the Prix Pictet in 2017. Smith’s work has appeared in Esquire, Wired, and other global publications.

David says; “My fascination with imagery stems from an ongoing interest in how it both reflects and shapes our collective experience. Having grown up in an era of accelerating digital technology, I have always been drawn to how imagery no longer merely documents reality, but actively constructs it. This duality—of reflection and distortion—drives my practice, compelling me to explore how images mediate our identities, memories, and relationships with the world around us.”

On this episode, Caren Sullivan talks to artist Vera Ryklova in 2020.

Vera Ryklova is a visual artist who works across the media of photography, video, performance and installation, and who has been developing her practice over the past nine years. She has received several awards, including Studio Residency at The Dean Art Studios (2022-24), Visual Arts Bursary (2023) and represented PhotoIreland at Futures Europe-based platform for photography. She was shortlisted for the Hennessy Portrait Prize (2016), which exhibited at the National Gallery of Ireland. 

Vera presented four solo exhibitions as well as exhibited in a number of group shows held in Ireland and the UK, including the FiLiA Feminist Conference. Her work has been featured in photography journals and art publications and is included in public art collections by the OPW State Art Collection, Trinity College Dublin and The Arts Council. 

In her practice Vera explores the concept of the self and the events that impact its social construction. She often investigates her own lived experiences and uses her own body to make her work. Producing material that confronts the condition of womanhood she exposes a conflict between two realities. She uses her practice as a distancing device that may allow her to experience a state of catharsis. The link between the artistic execution and the liberating emotional discharge is also at the centre of her interest.

Her activities are also engaged in curatorial practice. As a curator she presented two group exhibitions in Dublin. 

Originally from the Czech Republic, Vera moved to Ireland in 2007. Brought by a pure desire for a life change, this has been a journey of personal discovery which resulted in pursuing an artistic career. In this very sense she is proud to consider herself an Irish artist.

Based in Dublin, Vera has also been resident in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. In 2021 she completed an MA in Art and Research Collaboration at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Dún Laoghaire. In 2015 she graduated from the same Institute with a BA (Hons) in Photography. 

She is a professional member of Visual Artists Ireland.

On this episode, Caren Sullivan Talks to visual artist Aideen Barry in 2020.

Aideen Barry is a practising Visual Artist based in Ireland but with international representation. In 2020 she was elected to the RHA. She is a member of Aosdána and Lectures in several universities and schools of visual art in Ireland, the US and Europe.

 Barry is an artist whose work encompasses a vast range of disciplines and subjects, such as domestic labour, environmental fracture, and human vulnerability. Her work meditates on feminism, classism, intersectionality, and inequality. Utilising archives, museums, and other dialectic processes, she seeks to transfer the unknown through the experiential; democratising access to visual culture and complex ideas of otherness through clever ploys of collaboration and plot devices that seduce the viewer into her multi spatial experiences. Her works reflect her commitment to confronting unsettling truths and addressing gaps in the canon.

In 2022 she was awarded the International Studio & Curatorial Project Residency & Temple Bar Gallery & Studios Award and undertook her residency in January 2023.
