On this episode, Caren Sullivan talks to artist Cecilia Danell in 2020.

Cecilia Danell (b.1985) is a Swedish artist based in Galway, Ireland.

Her practice is process based, where accumulated research into landscape and the psychology of place is coupled with a strong interest in materiality and making. For over ten years, Danell has returned to her family farm in Sweden to walk and gather research material for paintings.

The experience of being in the landscape, along with the physical process of painting in the studio, results in works that detach themselves from the photographic source material. She walks and traces an environment that she knows intimately, happening upon decaying remnants of human activity, further upending the romantic notion of nature as untended wilderness.

Recent and ongoing research interests include the psychogeography movement and the psychological impact place has on a person, speculative fiction and Science Fiction novels. What strikes her about these novels is humanity's ability to persevere and adapt in adverse circumstances. The human urge to find solace in a primeval landscape grows increasingly stronger amidst the uncertainty of our current condition. Yet wilderness is for the most part a construct and the places she depicts are managed forest landscapes. Her sculptural objects, which often accompany the paintings in the space, use the language of theatre props to construct objects with the surreal quality of being made in the likeness of something, yet falling short of true semblance.

Cecilia Danell is the 2022 recipient of the RHA Hennessy Craig Award for painting, the ESB Keating Award at the 190th RHA Annual Exhibition, a 2017 Arts Council Next Generation Award and the 2011 Wexford Arts Centre Emergence Award and has received several bursary and project awards from the Arts Council. On this episode, Caren Sullivan talks to artist Marcia Misawa in 2020.

Marcia Misawa, is a visual artist, illustrator and designer, passionate about childhood and the ethical development of the mind.

She started her career in Ul/UX Design, then dove deeply into children's books illustration, path that brought her a huge experience in the field of Communication, Design and Illustration.

Her works combine Technology with traditional Arts & Crafts techniques, and she navigate seamlessly between watercolor paints, x-acto knives and softwares. Also, interaction design is one of her favourite themes to explore, not only on digital media, but also on paper. When designing interactivity, she is in a flow state! From books to websites, it's her passion to design experiences that spark a light in audience's hearts.

Marcia currently lives in Florida, USA, born in São Paulo, Brazil, as a 3rd generation of Japanese migrants in the world's largest Japanese community outside Japan.

For her Art is a tool for a major goal she has: to help people access their humanity, develop compassion and flourish in their full potential to practice and spread love.

Elaine Grainger is a visual artist she lives and works in Dublin. Graduated in 2018 with a Fine Art Masters Degree from NCAD.

Her graduate exhibition work was selected for The RDS Visual Arts Awards 2018 curated by Amanda Coogan. She was the winner of The RDS Visual Arts, Centre Culturel Irlandais Residency Award 2019. She is also the recipient of the RHA Peer Residency Award 2019.

One this episode, Caren Sullivan talks to artist Robert Armstrong in 2020.

The sources of Robert Armstrong's paintings include references to art history, ancient geological maps, and current environmental catastrophes. The paintings present images of landscape, mountains, caves, clouds, water, and floods - familiar landscape motifs in a changing world.

The paintings are not depictive of particular places or events, but instead reveal the struggle between the certainty of the photographic source and the process used to create the image. The paint - whether thick or thin, opaque or transparent - mostly depicts itself. Regard for the material properties of paint and the methods of its application can obliterate or blur the image in favour of the autonomous pulse of the new painting.

In contrast to digital imagery, which can be grasped quickly and flicked away, the intention is to make paintings which demand and reward slow looking.

Born in Gorey, County Wexford, Ireland, Robert Armstrong lives and works in Dublin, and is represented by the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery, also in Dublin. He is a Founder Member of Temple Bar Gallery + Studios and was Head of Painting at the National College of Art & Design (NCAD) from 2002 until his retirement in 2018, having taught at the college since 1991. He has exhibited regularly in Ireland and abroad for more than forty years. His work is included in many private and public collections and has been the subject of essays by writers including Aidan Dunne, Declan Long and Colm Tóibín.

On this episode, Caren Sullivan talks to artist Paul Hallahan in 2020.

Paul Hallahan is an Irish artist living and working at Fire Station Studio's Dublin whose work is primarily based in painting, but also looks to sculpture and video.

Interests within his work expand into many areas but commonly focus on how we as a species relate and interact with nature, taking art as a form or by-product of nature and our civilisation. Using various methods and techniques his paintings are built up of thin layers, this allows the works to be shaped and guided over a long period of time, it also allows light move between the layers and when used on raw canvas allows light move through the works. This has always been of interest to Hallahan as he wanted the works to be active to the viewer and transcend the composition and initial image of the work.

In 2009 in conjunction with Waterford City Council he set and ran Soma contemporary till 2012, working with many national and international institutions and artists. He has exhibited widely over the next 10 years and in 2018 he won the Golden Fleece Award. In recent years he has had exhibitions at Hang Tough Contemporary (Dublin), The Complex (Dublin), Royal Hibernian Academy (Dublin), The Lab (Dublin), Berlin Opticians Gallery (Dublin) and Roscommon Arts Centre In 2019 he was part of a two-person exhibition that was shown in the Lexicon Gallery Dublin, Garter Lane Gallery Waterford, Sternview Gallery Cork, Platform Arts Belfast. His work is part of the collections of The ArtsCouncil, DLR County Council, Industrial Development Agency Ireland (IDA), Trinity College Dublin, The Office of Public Works, Waterford City Collection and numerous private collections.

Jonathan Mayhew is an Irish artist and occasional writer based in Dublin.

Using poetry, literature, technology and theory, he manipulates physical and invisible materials creating works in a variety of media, questioning the world we live in. He is interested in how we think about technology and society, how we use it and how it in turn uses us, while exploring the blurring edges of fiction and reality. His works offers a poetic escape from the hyper reality we live in.

On this episode, Caren Sullivan talks to artist William O’Neil in 2020.

William O'Neill is a visual artist living and working in Meath, Ireland. He graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Art Painting from the National College of Art and Design in 2009.

His paintings are process driven. He meticulously creates still life scenes which he photographs and works from.

He's interested in these still life arrangements for their angles, shapes, the positive/negative space they create, how the objects interact with each other and their potential as subject matter.

'Luminous Gatherings' his first solo exhibition took place at Kevin Kavanagh Gallery in April 2022. He was the recipient of the Solstice Visual Arts Award at Solstice Arts Centre (2021). In 2019, he was shortlisted for the RHA Hennessy Craig Award. Born and raised in Co. Wexford in Ireland, Amanda Doran graduated from the National College of Art and Design in 2012. She is a figurative painter with a passion for the obscure and bold, brash colour.

Her paintings are thickly painted with wonderfully luscious colours and textures.

Amanda took a career pause and is currently a content creator on Instagram.

On this episode, recorded in 2020,Caren Sullivan talks to artist Austin Hearne.

Concerns around the occupation of Ireland by the Roman Catholic Church are at the heart of Austin Hearne's practice. The majesty and misery of this institution are the poles which Hearne operates within.

Photography is at the root of his practice, using this medium in its most experimental and expansive form to create performances, installations, films, music and mise-en-scéne. Playing with fact and fiction Hearne creates worlds, characters and scenarios to satirise, demonise and embellish. Alongside all this he brings in the stuff of the painting and decorating industry to make wallpapered interiors decorated with painted photographic objects and furniture.

Austin Hearne is supported by the Arts Council Bursary Award 2020,2021, 2022.

Recent projects include Requiem for Raymo (solo) at the RHA Gallery (which included a weekly performance as part of the installation.), (Nov 22 to Jan 23). His film Whispers was shown as part of the Gaze Film Festival where it won Best Irish Short

(2022).
