As we’ve been addressing sex and sexuality on the Uncertain Podcast, we’ve also been addressing purity culture—a movement that’s lead to secrecy, shame, and misinformation about sex and sexuality. Because of its use of God and the Bible to motivate with fear and shame, this can definitely fall into the category of Spiritual Abuse. You can catch up on the discussion so far by visiting tearsofeden.org/purity-culture, and listening to Episode 20 The Sex Education You Never Got with Kim Cavill and Episode 21 The Sexually Healthy Man with Andrew Bauman.
Now, todays episode wasn’t actually planned as a part of this series, however, after episode 21 was published, I realized there was a huge missing piece of this conversation that, I honestly have never heard addressed in the church, and that is the conversation around what do with our sexuality when we’re not having sex. So, I called up my friend Heather Gargis and asked her to discuss this with me. (Heather is a trauma therapist based in St. Louis and you can hear more of her story in episode 5 Monsters Under the Pew).
