You may have heard about the podcast “The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill”. It’s a podcast mini series gaining popularity and it chronicles the story of Mark Driscoll and Mars Hill church. It’s a story of systemic spiritual abuse, and I definitely recommend it.

            However, the bonus episode that came out last week added problematic elements to the conversation, including a misunderstand of the devastation caused by spiritual abuse. Uncertain and a couple other podcasters, Melanie Mudge from the Holy Heretics and Tim Whitaker of The New Evangelicals, decided to record our own bonus episode in response.

Today’s guest is Beth Allison Barr, author of The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth.

Beth Allison Barr received her B.A. from Baylor University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Medieval History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research focuses on women and religion in medieval and early modern England, especially in how they are viewed and portrayed in sermon literature.

The conversation about the subjugation of women in the church is an important one for the conversation of abuse.

Makoto Fujimura is a leading contemporary artist whose process driven, refractive “slow art” has been described by David Brooks of New York Times as “a small rebellion against the quickening of time”. Robert Kushner, in the mid 90’s, wrote on Fujimura’s art in Art in America this way: “The idea of forging a new kind of art, about hope, healing, redemption, refuge, while maintaining visual sophistication and intellectual integrity is a growing movement, one which finds Makoto Fujimura’s work at the vanguard.”
