September 03, 2019# 83 — Decolonization is for everyone w/ Nikki SanchezNikki Sanchez is a Media Maker, Decolonial Educator, Wild Guide and PhD. Nikki spends her days doing many important and impactful things. She creates documentary and educational media and designs programs to support and foster emerging indigenous filmmakers. She is a wilderness guide and ecological educator — doing land-based work with indigenous and non-indigenous people to help them reconnect themselves to the land and to simultaneously heal themselves and the landscape they live on. Nikki is also currently completing her PhD looking at immersive visual media and indigenous ontology. All of Nikki’s work is interconnected and contributes to her work as a Decolonial Educator. “It’s not accidental that I have chosen to focus a lot on the educational work I do on decolonization, because I truly believe that the world views and economic systems that were enacted as part of the colonial project of nation building are the root and crux of why we are globally facing potentially catastrophic climate change impacts and completely unsustainable and unviable, not only environmental systems, but economic and social systems as well.” Tune in to hear Nikki and Steph talk climate change, decolonization, the crisis in Mauna Kea, and how it’s all connected. July 23, 2019#82 — Story telling + connection w/ Lizzy Karp“You are not your job title. You are a multi-faceted human”Lizzy Karp is a community activist, connector and ‘baby’ DJ. She spends her days as a Senior Manager at TELUS STORY HIVE and is committed to using story telling as a vehicle for human connection. Matt and Lizzy first connected at ‘Rain City Chronicles’, an event Lizzy cofounded after moving to Vancouver 10 years ago. She had spent alot of time around the music and comedy scenes in Toronto, and had come to realize that she often found people in the audience to be more compelling than the characters on stage. So, in a new city where she knew no one, Lizzy decided to create an experience where everyday people could have the opportunity to share their stories. The goal was to create live story-telling nights that were accessible, inclusive and fun-spirited. “We are all content creators. So that gives us the opportunity to practice visibility. How can we own our story and tell it for people who are watching us, for the people who are listening to this conversation, for the people who need to hear it. That really excites me. On the other hand, when does it become too much? When are we commodifying our own story?”Lizzy reflects with Matt about how people are becoming more critical about who is telling what story, and the importance of reflecting on whose voice isn’t getting heard? And who is getting asked to tell the same story over and over again? Lizzy also helps to produce an annual event called ‘Loaded Bow’ in Palm Springs. ‘Loaded Bow’ is a gathering for self-identified women to come together to learn and to meet one another in a space that is designed for people to truly connect over conversation. It acts as an opportunity for entrepreneurial-spirited women to fill up their soul-points for the rest of the year in an inclusive environment. The program is peer-lead, and removes the conventional hierarchy usually present between speaker and audience, emphasizing the reality that we all have a story to tell and experiences that others can learn from. Sandy decided to start a podcast as a way for 3 friends in HR to sit down together and to share their stories and the lessons they had learned with a wider audience. The ultimate goal of the pod is to help others become better workplace humans, and to ask the question “How am I being a jerk at work?”. Check out Sandy’s pod ‘Don’t be a Jerk at Work’ (hosted w. July 09, 2019#80 — Utility, passion + embracing change w/ David Labistour“Today is the slowest things are going to be”On this week’s episode of Uncorked, Steph sits down with the outgoing CEO of Mountain Equipment Co-op, David Lebistour, to look back at what came before his 11 years as CEO, and to look forward to life after MEC. David’s career was not one he could have foreseen, but one common denominator throughout his life has been his openness to change. “If you are open to life as it comes at you, it gives opportunities to go to places that you would never had dreamed of” From his early aspirations of becoming a professional surf-sailor, to working as a designer in South Africa, to immigrating to Canada in his 40s and struggling to find work, to eventually finding a career than aligned with his passion at MEC, David has lived a life full of unpredictable change and adventure, and he has no plans to slow down. Since surrendering to the reality that a career as a professional athlete was not in the cards, David has remained committed to continue learning into adulthood. He has taken on a new athletic pursuit every 5 years since moving to Canada, embracing the activities that British Columbia has to offer. “If I look back on my life, I’ve always striven to be of use, utility, and value, but at the same time, I’ve always maintained a very strong passion in my life. And those two have very seldom been the same thing. My career and my passion have not always aligned, but I’ve always had a very strong passion for the activities that have been part of my life the whole way through … MEC is probably the only time in my life where my passion + my career have lined-up”. July 02, 2019#79 — Summer goals and galavanting w/ Matt + Steph“As an athlete you would never just build. You recover. You work hard, and you recovery hard.” Matt and Steph are back at the mic this week to talk summer vacation and summer goals. TeamCorker is OOO (Out of Office, or Only Operating Outdoors) this week, and the pair reflect on why we decided to commit to one week offline. There is something beautiful about shutting down. When a weekend doesn’t feel like long enough to recharge, its time to extend the break, and come back feeling fresh. A change in routine and a period of rest can be an opportunity to re-evaluate or recommit to the goals you set in January. Time off means different things to different people. “Do whatever allows you to feel recharged, to generate new ideas, and to give yourself space both physically and mentally to dream, to meander, to get lost. Because that is so healthy for us as humans, especially in a constantly connected environment.” June is 6 months into 2019 and it’s a great time to reflect. You have 6 months left for your 1 year goals. “All of those good intentions that look like goals, now need to either be put into action to become goals, or taken off the list. Because a good intention has no space on a goal sheet.” What can you celebrate? What have you have accomplished that gets you closer to your 5 year vision? What goals have you not accomplished yet that are still important to you? What goals can you take off the list that are no longer a priority? “Are the goals left on the goal sheet worthy of the next 6 months? Or do they need to be evaluated?” And if you didn’t achieve a goal in the first 6 months, but it is still important to you, its not time to give up on that goal, but to recommit and decide what you need to double down on. A goal you haven’t accomplished, is only a goal you haven’t accomplished YET. How do we renovate our relationship with time to have access to the outdoors this summer? What tweaks can you make to maximize the next couple of months of glorious sunshine? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information....more17minPlay
June 25, 2019#78 — Risks, purpose and time w/ Urszula Lipsztajn“Life is ultimately how you spend your time. What are you saying ‘yes’ to and what are you saying ‘no’ to?” This week Steph sits down with Coach and Guide for impact leaders and entrepreneurs, Urszula Lipsztajn. Urszula describes her journey from dissatisfaction in her corporate job, to living a life of purpose as a successful entrepreneur. In 2011, she was in what she thought was her dream job. To a bystander’s eye Urs was thriving, but in reality she had the early stages of an ulcer, her hair was going grey, and her relationship was struggling, all while she was working 70+ hours a week. Urs decided to take a risk, and to make the leap into entrepreneurship. Her first iteration of this was in instructional design and learning program work. She quickly discovered the reality of the financial highs and lows of entrepreneurship, and that doing the work she was doing didn’t fill her up. Since her time living in a 600 m2 apartment with her partner in East Vancouver, to living in Squamish with an abundant garden, Urs’ business and lifestyle have transformed dramatically, but this growth did not happen overnight. “If I see something that matters to me, I make it happen, no matter how terrified I am, or how empty the bank account is, or how much I can’t sleep. I just see it, and I need to do something about it”. Urs recognized, with the help of a coach, that her gift was in helping people in moments of vulnerability. People would come to her in personal crisis, and she was able to guide them quickly to a breakthrough, and she realized how amazing she felt afterwards. Urszula’s reminds us that “the greatest gift we are can give the world is to be ourselves. Because when we are ourselves we are able to serve the world in the way we are here to serve”. Urszula’s 3 most important values include: 1. Time2. Trust 3. Legacy “If you are able to trust yourself, you are able to spend your time on the things that most matter to you. And ultimately this results in the culmination of your legacy”.How can you spend you time today, so that you are proud of the legacy you leave? June 18, 2019#77 — Disrupt HR YVR 8.0 review + reflection w/ Matt + Steph#TeamCorker has been working hard behind the scenes for the last few months to put on our largest annual event. We bring together 400 people at Science World here in Vancouver to talk about the future of work and how we can disrupt the status quo. Matt and Steph sat down at the mic to reflect on this years event, to discuss the ways we decided to disrupt how events in the city are usually run, and to highlight some of the truth bombs dropped from the stage by our incredible speakers. We love being the ones to host this conversation, and this event is our way to give back to the HR community and beyond. We choose to open up the speaker applications for Disrupt HR YVR, allowing us to highlight some of the visible and invisible diversities that exist amongst the thought leaders of HR. As a result, our speakers weren’t chosen because of their title, or role, or their relationship to the Corker Collective, it was about selecting an idea that made our hearts beat faster. June 11, 2019#76 — The highs + lows of entrepreneurship, + cultivating curiosity w/ Avni Patel ThompsonThis week on the pod, Avni joins Steph to talk all things entrepreneurship. After working in the corporate sphere for 10 years, Avni made the jump from working for Adidas in Shanghai into the fast-paced world of start-ups. Avni’s first venture gave her a crash course in entrepreneurship, and over those first ten months, the seeds for her next project, ‘Poppy’, we sown. Anvi explains that entrepreneurship is like walking a tight rope between curiosity and discipline. The obsession with the concept of ‘Poppy’ stemmed from the idea that “everyone says it takes a village to raise a child, but none of us have a village anymore. And so, what would it take to leverage technology to be able to build some semblance of a village”. After 4 years of Poppy, the scalability of the business broke down, and she decided to call it. Anvi reflects that, “sometimes it is the better and right thing to call it. And that doesn’t mean everything is lost … This is what trying looks like. You have a bold vision in your head, and you give it a shot, you give it your all in the most responsible way you can. And sometimes it doesn’t work”. While quitting is often the hardest thing to do, Avni remains obsessed with answering the question: “How do we make the lives of working mothers easier?”, and her heart is beating as she dives into her next entrepreneurial pursuit. June 04, 2019#75 — Pain, slowing down + watching waves w/ Hiroko Demichelis“I don’t think that many of us are truly honest about pain. And about the fact that we truly do experience pain, if not daily, weekly… The most useful thing that I can share is normalizing pain, so that we can soften into it. So that when we experience psychological pain, instead of wanting to push it away or wanting to attack it with strategies, we can soften into it and create space and capacity for it". Hiro is a registered clinical counsellor, a certified expert in the use of neurofeedback and biofeedback, a positive physiology master, and a brain enthusiast. This week she sits down with Steph to talk about pain, Mondays, what gummy bears mean to her, and why we all need to meditate and slow down. Hiro uses the word lab because she believes in the power of curiosity. She explains that to be curious, we need to slow down and say no — “In slowing down I will get there faster”. Hiro has discovered that it is not the meditation itself that brings advantages, but the curiosity that we cultivate through meditation that brings about the benefits, the decreased stress, the improved sleep, and the increased levels of psychological wellbeing. And Hiro is now truly interested in discovering how those benefits for the self can be used to impact community as a tool for social justice; using mediation to become less preoccupied with the self and more interested in helping others. “The more I surrender and soften within pain, the more I create capacity to be resilient and ultimately to be joyful and compassionate. So it is a message of life, of flow, of flourishing”. May 28, 2019#74 — Soulful entrepreneurship, decolonization, and leadership w/ Jacqueline Jennings“My vision for the future is that we need more and better leaders”Jacqueline Jennings joins Steph on the pod this week. Jacqueline is coach to conscious leaders, business consultant, a group facilitator and a facilitator of decolonization practices. Steph riffs with Jacqueline about her ‘Soulful Entrepreneur: Ranch Retreat', how they came to be, and how they fit within he along-term vision. Jacqueline’s ultimate mission is to support people in remembering that we are not separate from each other, from nature, or from the source, and her retreats are an extension of this goal. “It’s hard to let go of limiting beliefs because they serve us, and there of lots of reasons why they show up. But there is a simplicity to letting them go, and then seeing what is possible when we are coming from a place of wholeness. It’s mind-blowing”.Listen to the full episode to hear why Jacqueline thinks we are all leaders, how she is raising a little human to be conscious in today’s world, and why she made the shift in her career from a successful Executive Assistant to her current role working with soulful entrepreneurs and businesses.
