October 08, 2019#88 — Run the mile you’re in w/ Lisa BentleyLisa Bentley is a speaker, author, and 11-time IRONMAN champion. She is one of the most decorated Canadian triathletes, and has remained heavily involved in sport since her retirement from professional competition in 2010. Lisa is known for her contagious smile, and describes how she found joy in the hard stuff; “I’m not saying racing was an easy thing. But at the core of it, I loved what I did. I would get to the start-line, or wake up on race-day and say to myself, there is nothing else I would rather be doing” Lisa and Steph riff on how Lisa has stayed involved in the sport she loves during retirement, and how the lessons she learned as a professional athlete translate into her life today. For as long as she can remember, it was ingrained in Lisa not to quit. She attributes this lesson to much of her success in sport, but also acknowledges that she has had to learn to be kinder to herself, loving herself enough to sometimes let herself off the hook. She hopes to see people love triathlon as much as she does, and hopes that people don’t lose their joy in becoming too regimented. Lisa gave Steph the advice years ago to “Run the mile you’re in”, and both Steph and Lisa find this lesson to hold true in all aspects and stages of life. October 01, 2019#87 — Teff and trail Running w/ Alicia WoodsideAlicia Woodside is the founder of Teffle Waffles, an accomplished ultra-runner, and a technical writer for a local tech company. She is the epitome of what it means to hustle for your dreams. Her day job funds her entrepreneurial dreams of bringing nutritionally dense and protein rich frozen teff-waffles to grocery stores. When she isn’t writing about tech, or slinging waffles in her industrial kitchen, Alicia is running amongst the trees, preferably fast, and with a teammate by her side. Her most recent accomplishment is her FKT (fastest known time)of the West Coast Trail, covering 75km or terrain in 11.5 hours. This run, along with her FKT of the Howe Sound Trail are her two proudest athletic accomplishments, because of her speed, but also because they were completed with a friend and teammate by her side. Alicia firmly believes that a teammate makes her runs more fun and meaningful, and also result in her best times. Alicia credits her career path to asking herself the question; “What would I do for free … what would I commit to doing every weekday for the next ten years that I’d be willing to do without getting paid”. Look out for Alicia’s Teffles in the Nester’s freezer aisle as she makes the jump from local farmer’s markets to major grocery stores.Show Links:Keep up with Alicia’s adventures on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/funtimes.woodside/?hl=enAlicia’s recap of running the West Coast Trail:https://notrunningforgold.com/2019/06/24/running-the-west-coast-trail-tara-and-alicias-2019-female-fkt/Teffels Waffles:https://www.teffles.comhttps://www.instagram.com/teffles_waffles/?hl=enBook Alicia is reading: Alone on the Wall — By Alex Honnald https://www.amazon.ca/Alone-Wall-Alex-Honnold/dp/0393353176Podcasts she Loves:How I Built Thishttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-i-built-this-with-guy-raz/id1150510297Work, Play, Love https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/work-play-love-with-lauren-fleshman-and-jesse-thomas/id1368711150Alicia’s favourite race:http://www.goldenultra.comHer favourite trail:https://www.greatcanadiantrails.com/Newfoundland-and-Labrador/East-Coast-Trail?gclid=CjwKCAjw2qHsBRAGEiwAMbPoDOO5m-HXlqnCCIsvtkgJn0IKx3gnmzyXMrw3LmNu6A5ni3jzaPM6MBoCxqIQAvD_BwE Hosted on Acast. September 10, 2019#84 — Level Up w/ Shanique Kelly aka DJ SoftieshanShanique Kelly is a DJ and event producer in Vancouver, she runs Intersessions YVR, and throws her own monthly parties in Vancouver. Shanique began her DJ career by attending the first ever Intersessions workshop, a series which aims to bring light to the gender disparity in electronic music. Since this serendipitous beginning, Shanique has gone on to run the Vancouver Intersessions Workshops, and now produces her own parties, ‘Level Up’, a monthly queer rap, hip hop and r&b dance party. Shanique’s passion is in creating safe spaces for people who are part of marginalized communities, whether they are people of colour or part of the queer community. After DJing for other event producers and club owners, Shanique noticed the trend of tokenism, and was inspired to create her own event with a focus on hiring people of colour and members of the LGBTQ+ community. By curating these events thoughtfully, and purposefully, her parties have become spaces for people who don’t always feel safe or comfortable. Listen in to hear Matt and Shanique chat about dealing with imposter syndrome, how to avoid tokenism, and the importance of representation.
