  • Building Bravery with Kimberly Behre Kenna

Authors often tap into their past experiences and memories and plant them in our stories. Speaking from experiences, anecdotes that my parents shared with me decades ago will wind up in a story, not in a self-indulgent way, but more as a way of bringing some added realism to a plot point. Today’s guest, Kimberly Behre Kenna, shared a beautiful story about how she integrated an experience her mother had while growing up into her latest novel, Jett Jamison and the Secret Storm.

    Meet Kimberly Behre Kenna

Kimberly has worn many hats in her professional life including detective's assistant, breakfast cook, tae-kwon-do instructor, adolescent & family counselor and fifth grade teacher, her favorite job ever. As a writer, her poems and stories have been published in American Writers Review, Mused, Plumtree Tavern, and Rubbertop Review. Her full-length play, “Ana’s Hummingbird,” was given a staged reading at The Dramatists Guild in NYC. She is eer inspired by the power of play, thoughtful questions, and a life-long belief in nature's ability to heal and joined me on Uncorking a Story to talk about her life and latest novel, Jett Jamison and the Secret Storm.

    Key Themes

    1. Kimberly's journey as an author: Kimberly shares that she never thought she would become a writer, highlighting the unexpected nature of her path. This emphasizes the importance of embracing new opportunities and being open to exploring different passions and talents.
    2. The power of self-discovery and reflection: Kimberly talks about the process of self-discovery and reflection that led her to embrace a new role as an author. She also discusses how she turned to writing to process grief from childhood trauma. This emphasizes the importance of introspection and personal growth in finding fulfillment and purpose in life.
    3. The influence of generational connections: Kimberly discusses how stories she heard from her mother as a child have shaped her writing. This highlights the significance of family connections and the impact they can have on our creative endeavors. It also shows how we, as writers, carry the seeds of ideas around with us and how important it is to water those seeds and give them sunlight—at some point, they may sprout into beautiful ideas.
    4. Brave Girls: Kimberly introduces her book collection, Brave Girls, which features unique characters with common themes. She believes in the power of representation and wants to provide young readers with strong, relatable female characters. Through her stories, Kimberly aims to inspire and empower girls to embrace their own bravery, resilience, and unique qualities.

    6. Into the Groove, with Zaida Alfaro

Sometimes I interview someone and we just don’t click. There are those interviews where we just fail to find a groove and I think to myself, that could have been better. I am happy to report that today’s interview is not one of those! Maybe it’s because I’ve interviewed Zaida before, maybe its because we are both natives of South Florida, or maybe it’s because we both share an appreciation for Rob Thomas and 90s rock, but this conversation with Zaida Alfaro was a blast from the get go.

      Meet Zaida Alfaro

Zaida was born into art. Her mother is an amazing artist, composer, and musician who taught Zaida how to play the piano when she was 12 years old. She has taken the storytelling approach of her songwriting to pen two novels, the most recent being In the Key of Dead.

      Key Themes

      1. Zaida's upbringing in an artistic family heavily influenced her passion for storytelling and music. Her mother, an artist, composer, and musician, taught her to play the piano at a young age, shaping her creative journey.
      2. Zaida's advice to her younger self would be to not be too hard on herself. Self-acceptance and letting things unfold naturally are important lessons she has learned throughout her career.
      3. Zaida's novels, "The Last Note" and "In the Key of Dead," showcase her storytelling approach, combining her songwriting skills with long-term fiction writing. These books delve into the music industry, cozy murder mysteries, and personal struggles.
      4. Miami serves as a significant source of inspiration for Zaida, and she loves writing about the city and its diverse personalities. Her novels provide readers with a vivid sense of being in Miami and offer glimpses into her Latin culture and family.
      5. Zaida encourages embracing creativity in various forms, not just limited to traditional artistic expressions. She believes creativity is a way of thinking, problem-solving, and expressing oneself, urging others to explore their creative potential.

      7. Unleashing the Muse, with Lauren, J.A. Bear

When I was a kid, my brother Jimmy and I would watch the original Clash of the Titans over and over and over. It had everything a young boy would love; heroes, Gods, magical weapons, and a young Maggie Smith. When offered the chance to interview the author of a book entitled Medusa’s sisters, not even Perseus himself could stop me!

        Meet Lauren J.A. Bear

After studying English at UCLA and Education at LMU, Lauren taught middle-school Humanities for over a decade – and survived! She is a teaching fellow for the Holocaust Center for Humanity, and joined me today to talk about her debut novel Medusa’s Sisters.

        Key Themes

        1. The importance of belief and persistence: One of the main lessons highlighted in the episode is the significance of believing in oneself as a writer and persisting through challenges. Lauren emphasizes that the only difference between an amateur and a professional writer is the ability to keep going.
        2. Overcoming imposter syndrome: Imposter syndrome, a feeling of inadequacy or self-doubt, is a common struggle for many writers. Lauren discusses the need to watch out for imposter syndrome and offers insights on embracing authenticity and self-love to combat it.
        3. The power of starting and doing the work: Lauren emphasizes that the act of starting to write and consistently putting in the work is the first step towards becoming a writer. It is highlighted that regardless of whether others find value in your writing, the process of doing the reps and honing your craft is crucial.
        4. Craft and precision in writing: The episode explores the importance of craft and precision in writing, drawing attention to the meticulousness of poets and the need for clarity in fantasy writing. Aspiring writers can learn from the idea of carefully choosing each word and tightening their writing to create impactful and engaging prose.
        5. Learning from rejection and perseverance: Lauren shares her experience of receiving numerous rejections for her first manuscript before finding success with her second. This highlights the importance of perseverance and learning from rejection as a writer. Aspiring writers can take away the lesson that rejection is a part of the journey and that they must keep going despite setbacks.

        7. Why Not? With Mark Schiff

This episode is the result of mistaken identity. Somehow I got it in my head that comedian Mark Schiff was in the room next to my brother’s at Memorial Sloan Kettering, a specialty hospital in New York City treating cancer. Not only does Mark live in LA and not New York, but he doesn’t have cancer—which would make a short-term residency at MSK odd to say the least. When I saw that Mark appeared on another podcast to promote a book, it triggered a (false) memory so I emailed him a sob story and invited him on the show. He graciously accepted in spite of the fact I had the wrong guy.

          Meet Mark Schiff

Mark Schiff is a stand-up comedian who has headlined at comedy clubs nationwide, including all the major casinos in Las Vegas and Atlantic City, and toured worldwide with Jerry Seinfeld for twenty-five years. He joined me on Uncorking a Story to chat about his career and book Why Not? Lessons on Comedy, Courage, and Chutzpah.

          Key Themes

          1. Persistence is essential: Mark emphasizes the importance of persistence in various aspects of life, such as pursuing a career in comedy, writing, and publishing. Listeners will learn that success often comes from consistently putting in the effort and not giving up, even in the face of rejection or disappointment.
          2. About the Book: In "Why Not?" Mark shares his remarkable journey in the world of comedy and beyond. The book explores Mark's experiences, challenges, and triumphs as he navigates the comedy scene, faces stage fright, and grows his audience size. It also delves into his persistence and perseverance in pursuing his dreams, as he faces rejections and eventually secures a book deal. Ultimately, "Why Not?" aims to inspire readers to embrace courage, pursue their passions, and find their own sense of community and belonging.
          3. Thick skin is necessary: Building a thick skin is crucial when facing challenges and setbacks. The episode highlights the need for perseverance and resilience in the face of criticism or rejection. Listeners will understand that developing a strong mindset is essential for navigating the ups and downs of creative pursuits.
          4. Community provides support: The episode emphasizes the significance of community in Mark's life. Whether it's the comedy community, fellow writers, or religious community, having a support system plays a vital role in personal and professional growth. Listeners will learn that surrounding themselves with supportive individuals can provide encouragement, inspiration, and a sense of belonging.
          5. Overcoming challenges is possible: The episode touches on Mark’s tough upbringing and the obstacles faced throughout their life. However, he emphasizes that it is possible to overcome adversity and create a fulfilling life. Listeners will be inspired to persevere through their own challenges, knowing that they have the strength to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.

Though it sounds unintuitive, experiencing grief can be a good thing. All of us suffer losses at various points during our life—it could be the loss of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or even seeing your kids go off to college. 7. Love Lasts Forever, with Jane L. Rosen

I love it when conversations go to unexpected places and today’s does just that. I didn’t anticipate speaking about the passing of my brother but doing so with today’s guest, author Jane L. Rosen, simply felt right given one of the core themes of her latest novel, On Fire Island.

                  Meet Jane L. Rosen

Jane is an author, screenwriter and former Huffington Post contributor. Jane often takes inspiration from real-life stories and interviews to craft her novels. Her first novel Nine Women, One Dress was translated into ten languages. Her second novel Eliza Starts a Rumor has been optioned by NBC. She joined me on Uncorking a Story to discuss her latest book, On Fire Island.

                  4. The importance of encouragement for aspiring writers: Jane believes in offering support and encouragement to aspiring writers, especially the younger generation. She shares her experiences of helping young adults with their writing and providing feedback on their work. Listeners will be inspired to uplift and support aspiring writers in their own lives.

                  7. Unleashing the Writer Within, with Chris Ehrlich

I’ve long believed that curiosity is one of the most powerful superpowers that authors wield. Thinking it through more, curiosity may help us craft interesting plots, but its nothing without relatability. If our storylines are not relatable to readers, all of the curiosity in the world is useless. That’s one of the lessons I learned from today’s guest, Chris Ehrlich.

                    Meet Chris Ehrlich

Chris is an author, entrepreneur, husband, dad of 3, and tennis hacker. He holds a degree in English and political science from Denison University and joined me on Uncorking a Story to discuss first book, Parts of a Life: 40 Stories on Youth to Adulthood.

                    Key Takeaways

                    1. Relatability: Chris emphasizes the importance of making stories relatable to a wide audience. By avoiding a first-person perspective and focusing on universal experiences like school, family, and relationships, he aims to create stories that anyone can connect with.
                    2. Narrowing Down Topics: When discussing his book, Chris faced the challenge of narrowing down the topics he wanted to cover. He wanted to explore various subjects but decided to focus on one topic per chapter to ensure a diverse range of stories and subjects.
                    3. Positive Feedback: Chris expresses gratitude for the positive feedback he received from readers and acquaintances. The support and favorable reactions to his book have been gratifying and encouraging for him as a writer.
                    4. Discovering Writing Style: Through the process of writing his first book, Chris discovered his unique style of poetic short stories. He encourages aspiring writers to experiment with different writing styles and find their voice early on to pave the way for future literary success.
                    5. Reflection and Enjoyment: Writing his book allowed Chris to reflect on his life experiences and appreciate them in a bigger sense. He found pleasure in reliving those moments and realized the significance of events that he may have initially downplayed.
