Last week, we explored how his once orally transmitted teachings were written down in Sri Lanka. We also saw how the community of monks expanded, and how faultlines appeared along conservative and more modern interpretations of his message.
The conservative faction wanted to adhere solely to the teachings as they were written down in Sri Lanka and the commentaries based on them.
So last week, we followed the surviving branch of this tradition, often known as the “Way of the Elders”, or Theravada.
This week and the next, we’ll explore the other branch: the modernists, or “Mahayana”.
I hope you’ll appreciate that a 2000 year history can hardly be summed up in the half hour or so we have to do the interview. So, like in most previous editions of the podcast, we’ve had to resort to generalizations and simplifications. Also, we’ll split the philosophy section off from the section where we talk about the different practice schools, and how they are unique. So this week philosophy, and next week, the practice schools.
