Undeadly Serious

Our favorite straight-talking moral philosopher-biologist-physician-occultist is here! In this episode, we meet Van Helsing, Lucy moans a lot, and Cary Elwes is prepared to make the ultimate blood donation.

This time, we take a look at poor Mina's super weird movie "date", in which Dracula bought her no snacks, almost ate her as a snack, and then decided to tame a wolf for her instead. So many red flags!

This week it's all about "the eyyyeeess!" and when ours are happy or pained. Lucy gets questionable medical treatment for bizarre symptoms, all three suitors hang out again, Van Helsing gets a name drop, and Wolf Watch 2K19 continues.

We also pause to acknowledge that we aren't super well equipped to talk about the can of worms opened by some elements of the commentary, but feel they should be addressed in some way. Regarding that, we maybe didn't do a perfect job of explaining our concerns in the episode, so here's exactly what we found troubling: in his commentary, Coppola jumped straight from the idea of AIDS to the idea of sexual abuse. Those are two things that our culture heavily associates with gay men in ways that stigmatize that community and actively contribute to their harm and oppression.

He didn't make the connection outright, but it's built into the subtext of our culture, and that kind of thing contributed to the delayed/underwhelming response to the HIV/AIDS crisis and still actively harms gay folks today. I (Shannon) was a little optimistic about the supporting resources I was going to be able to find talking about these connections specifically, but these are a good starting point. The title of the article from The Atlantic is a bit misleading, but it does a good job of explaining why these kinds of associations are harmful. The Avert page explains the harmful cycle of homophobia and stigma as it relates to HIV.

In this episode, Mary and Shannon discuss "Cinematograph," which has almost nothing to do with a cinematograph. Instead we are Very Concerned with the exact mechanics of getting in and out of boxes, dropping bottles, and responding to street harassment.

There are several questionable elements in this scene-- the costumes, the character motives, the reason for the scene to exist at all... and Coppola didn't answer any of these queries, so, once again, it's up to Mary and Shannon to try and make sense of it all.

*DISCLAIMER-- this scene is graphic and sexually violent, so if discussions of such content are difficult for you, you may want to skip this episode.

Have you ever wanted to feel sea-sick while sitting in your living room? Well now, you can, if you watch along with us for this episode! In addition to the incessantly swaying camera, you'll get some cool new Draculas, hot girls kissing in the rain, nonsensical metaphors, and some topical shade thrown at Mary's alma mater.

This episode brings you Part II of our discussion of "Many Strange Things"--a quick recap, a deep dive into our thoughts on the scene itself, and an open letter to our three vampire-lady friends.

This scene was full of so many Strange Things, that we had to devote two episodes to discussing it all. This episode brings you the Unholy Description, in which John Harker finally learns to be afraid, explores the castle, and the movie fully earns its R rating. This week, we bring you part of the discussion and The Count-- stay tuned for part two, where we discuss even more, and read our open letter.

This week, we see Dr. Seward's sewer-like sanitarium and once more visit Renfield and his gross eating habits. Oh, and literally nothing happens, story-wise. Just how pointless is this scene? Let's find out!

It's Galentine's day, so we're bringing you an episode all about two giggling, gossiping gals! (And also three very complexly characterized suitors, if anyone needs a date for tomorrow.)
