God made an everlasting covenant with Abraham. He blessed him and gave him the promise of land and seed, which would go on to become a great nation. Abraham passes on his possessions and all of these promises as an inheritance to his son Isaac, and Isaac to his son Jacob/Israel. There is a clear distinction between "Israelites" and "Hebrews" in the Bible and secular writings from antiquity. It's a mistake to homogenize the two. The children of Israel were attacked by Amalek for seemingly no reason. This was their first challenge from an outside force.
