Episode 2: Am I a lukewarm Christian? Jesus told a church He would spit them out. Revelation 3, Laodicea, and the divided heart.

Not atheists. Not pagans. A church — a room full of people who would have raised their hands and called themselves believers. And Jesus says He is about to vomit.

"I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth." Revelation 3:15-16

Laodicea had no good water. It was piped in — scalding from Hierapolis, ice cold from Colossae — and by the time it arrived, both had gone tepid. Travelers gagged on it. Jesus looked at that church and called them their own drinking water.

So here's the question we settle tonight, and it is not about somebody else: am I lukewarm?

We go from Laodicea to Elijah on Mount Carmel and "how long halt ye between two opinions" — to the double minded man and the divided heart — to how nobody chooses lukewarm, you drift into it one degree at a time, and the five hands on your thermostat: comfort, money, entertainment, approval, busyness.

Then the marks of a lukewarm heart, in detail. Why lukewarm is more dangerous than cold. The verdict. And the mercy that comes right after it: behold, I stand at the door, and knock.

Episode 1: Am I really saved? How do I know if I am truly saved? In Matthew 7:21-23 Jesus said many will call Him Lord on the last day and hear four words back: "I never knew you, depart from me." Not atheists. Not the Pharisees. People who prophesied in His name, cast out devils, did many wonderful works — and were completely certain they were in.

So how do you know that sentence is not about you?

In this episode of Unflinching we take Matthew 7:21-23 apart word by word in the King James Bible. Why Jesus chose "many" and not "some." What "Lord, Lord" tells you about how sincere these people were. Why He never disputed a single line of their resume. What the Greek word ginosko means and why "knew" is not about information. Why "never" is worse than losing something. What "workers of iniquity" actually means.

Then the witnesses: Judas, who had the same resume. Saul and Balaam, who prophesied while God had rejected them. Paul's arithmetic in 1 Corinthians 13. The sheep and the goats in Matthew 25 — and why the sheep could not remember doing any of it.

Why did God allow Solomon to have 1,000 wives and concubines? How many wives did Solomon have, and did God ever approve of it? First Kings 11:3 says seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines, and it says his wives turned away his heart. Is polygamy a sin in the Bible? Does God allow a man more than one wife? We settle it from the King James Bible — Deuteronomy 17:17, written before Solomon was born, in the chapter that commanded every king to copy the law out in his own hand.
