Hi my name is Taylor and I am going to be discussing the amazing life of the Queen of Salsa, formally known as Celia Cruz. Celia Cruz was born (real full name) on October 21, 1925 in the musically diverse city of Havana, Cuba. She grew up in an extremely important time for tropical music in cuba and eventually became one of the most renowned artist of that genre and more not only in her own country but throughout Latin America. She did grow up in a very weird time for Cuba. Not only was music changing for the better, political, the country was at it’s worst. But she used the one thing that brought everyone a sense of euphoria, her voice. Celia has always been a musical person. As she got older she would compete in singing competitions and win. She even did small commercial jingles. But it wasn’t until the late 40s and 50s she got her big break. During that time, an Afro Cuban group famously known as La Sonora Matancera was at it’s peak. This band was famous for singing with other singers like Bienvenido Grada, Celio González, and Benny Moré. Their lead singer, Myrta Silva, had wanted to leave the group to start a family in her country of Puerto Rico which left her spot open. Celia auditioned, and with hard work she became the groups first black front woman. Celia first record with La Sonora in August 1950 and wasn’t received well by the public because she was black. But she persevered and kept doing what she loved most. She stayed with La Sonora for 15 years and recorded songs like Juancito Trucupey and Yerbero Moderno. They also made songs in honor of the Saints of the afro-Cuban religion, Santeria. The most populars were, Palo Mayimbe, yemaya, and Guede Zaina. As year passed, living in Cuba become a lot more tense. The Castro regime didn’t like how La Sonora accepted gigs in other countries, so once the group flew to Mexico for a concert in 1960, the regime banned them from ever returning to cuba again. Celia COULDNT even attend her parents funerals. She then moved to the United States, found a home in New York, and then became a citizen. She stayed with La Sonora until 1965 and then began her solo career. She was contacted by Tito Puente who was very important in the making Latin Jazz in New York. That was the beginning of the next chapter of musical career Celia and Tito puente made a few albums together which weren’t so successful. So she left for Fania records and joined the Fania All-Stars with Johnny Pacheco and debuted her most popular album Celia & Johnny. With Fania, Celia career skyrocketed. She had joined Fania in the 1970s which was also the time salsa was extremely popular. With them she record hits like Bemba Colora, Toro mata, and Quimbara. Salsa evetually died like most genres but Celia’s popularity didn’t. Years lster she made another hit entitled “La Negra Tiene Tumba’o”. A few months after releasing final album Regalo Del Alma in 2003, celia passed away. Her career lasted a little over 50 years and her impact on music in the Spanish speaking world is still seen in recent years. Celia as well as some of the Fania All-Stars paved the way for the popularity of genres such as Salsa, merengue, and reggaetón.

GALA ACADEMY - COS LA MID CITY

 

Olivia Liu has attended GALA since 9th grade. 

She currently has a 4.39 GPA and has completed ten AP courses including AP Biology, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Computer Science A, AP Physics, AP Statistics, AP US History, AP World History, AP English Language AP Capstone (two-year course of AP Seminar and AP Research).

Her AP seminar topic was titled "Beauty Standards Impact on Women of Color" and evaluated the way that Eurocentric favoritism in media impacts women of color socioeconomically and psychologically. 

Her AP research topic this year is a critique to examine if Disney utilized colorblind or Critical Race Theory when they represented Latina culture in the establishment of the first Latina Princess, Elena of Avalor. 

Olivia will attend Mount Saint Mary's University next Fall and plans to double major in film and child development. 

Her goal is to become an animation producer to create shows that feature diversity and address topics not usually covered in animation. 

Olivia received the prestigious Mount Saint Mary's LePuy Founders Award recognizing her academic achievement and providing her with a full scholarship at Mt. St Mary's.

Miriam Garcia born on April 22, 2004 to a family of two. She attends STEM Academy of Hollywood because of her interest in her older sister’s interdisciplinary projects at the school. 

She was accepted to and plans to attend Dartmouth University as an Engineering major with a full scholarship.

Roxana Behdad is Hamilton High's Valedictorian and will attend Cornell University in the Fall 2022.

Majoring in Government. 

Roxana is interested in seeking a position in International Storytelling and Journalism.

Roxana started a magazine called "Demolition" during Quarantine and has been the Diversity and Inclusion Chaplain for the Youth and Government Club at Hamilton High School.

Valedictorian Ms. Yasmin Perez is an eighteen-year-old female Latino student. 

Has grown up with the passion of engineering. 

She is a first-generation college student who was accepted into Harvey Mudd College. 

She has the desire to pursue an Aerospace engineering degree and wants to work for NASA upon completion of her degree.

Tyler Lee is a graduating Senior at University HS Charter who will be attending UCSB as a pre-biology student.  

While at Uni, Tyler enrolled and successfully completed 10 Advanced Placement and three college courses.  

Tyler is super excited and stated that he won't be able to sleep last night because of this awesome opportunity.  ;}

Rachel Reyes Segura is a first-generation Latina.

What is like losing a loved one for example your grandmother, uncle, singer, teacher, friend, Favorite Athelete etcHi My name is omid khanian i am a 11th grader in uni and this is an episode of what is like losing a loved one. Please listen this might make you cry if u lost your grandmother, uncle, friend, family, teacher and more cause this happens to me in 2021 That i lost 2 one my grandmother and my uncle.On February 17th 2021 I lost my grandmother due to cancer. She was 74 years old. Before she died. I left my cousin's house. I cried because she was an angel that is part of our family and we all don’t want to lose her. I prayed to god that hopefully she will wake up and continuing here life. On Valentine's day 2021 she suffered a stroke then she went to the hospital and the doctor gave her the vaccine shot but we said noooo cause she has cancer but the doctor said we have to do it. When my grandmother was in my cousins home she was sleeping and she wasn’t waking up she was still breathing which is a good sign but when she returned to the hospital (me and my parents was at home) When it was 11:18pm my 2 cousin check her pulse it stop moving and that moment my cousin were crying so much. Before when she got a stroke she felt better like she was healthy but when she got a stroke it's sad. My Grandmother died of cancer but i didn’t know yet cause i was sleeping. On February 18th 2021 i was in a zoom meeting and it was my 1st period class on ZOOM and my mother interrupted me for one second and she said to me “Omid Joon ………. I have to tell you something ….. It's bad news ……… Mam… an (She was crying to) finished (Passed away) she died last night when you were sleeping………..”. I was listening to the song Ouj-e-asman by Mohammad Esfahani which means “On the top sky” (it was a sad song) And that moment i was shocked crying so much that i close my Chromebook cause i was feeling down like i didn’t want to finish school because it is an important day a sad day for us. Throughout the day I emailed my teachers and saying i can’t make it to the zoom meeting because my grandmother passed away etc. While i am talking to this podcast makes me sad inside to so i might feel sad. Sorry if i stop on a word cause it feels like she is listening to my podcast. When it was here funeral my grandpa was crying alot cause my grandpa loves my grandmother so much and my grandpa is 84 so they are both 10 years apart my grandparents was born in iran my grandma was 14 and my grandpa was 24. My grandparents was born during WW2 but it wasn’t in iran thank god.During her funeral to me it felt like she didn’t pass away. She is here And every month when it's close to her day she comes to my dream a lot and also we have to go to her grave every month until her year because it is the jewish rule. If you would like to see her she will like to meet everyone that we introduced to her and she loved my teachers, my friends family back in elementary school and she will do anything. Her grave is in Eden Memorial Park. We don't know the name yet but I will lyk.And here is a cool story on June 19th 2021 we went to see her and once we see her my mom was saying maman joon we've missed you so much (my mom cried) please life is not the same without you we've missed you so much Thank you so much for being with us during this difficult time letting omid, getting good grades and getting his vaccine thank you maman joon. After my mom finished talking there were thunderstorms. Before when we saw her it was sunny, a little bit chilly and right after that it started raining a lot like hard rain. That means to me that I think my grandmother was crying so hard that she misses us so much. Then when we left and went to wash our hands it stopped over in her gravesite it was raining but in front of the Eden memorial it was not raining which she was crying in her own gravesite and i never see that happen. It was a gift from god that she could hear us.One time my grandmother came t
