STORY / BORING TEXT:
Once again we go with a game that is VERY important for me in a personal way. I'd definitively put Tales of Phantasia in my TOP10 or even TOP5 (TOP ToP?). Played this first as a kid and couldn't believe it's a SNES game. Awesome game, amazing graphics, wonderful soundtrack... everything was ahead of its time!
I already arranged (ruined?) at least 3 or 4 tracks from this game, without counting this one, and definitively will do more in a future. Despite not an obscure game at all, the soundtrack deserves more love, at least for any track that is not Fighting of the Spirit (cool tune too, but fortunately this one gets plenty of love already).
This was done for Pixel Mixers. June's month was "4 elements", and the AIRbirds represents the wind. The airbirbs are bird-shaped machines powered by Volt (spirit of electricity) that your characters use to fly all around the world map. Video comes a bit late, but hey Volt! Let's go!
Besides Tales of Phantasia I also added some elements from the famous german movie, The Neverending Story, to both music and video. Just though both sources fits pretty well. Tales of Phantasia is basically that: a fantasy tale, very much like The Neverending Story. They even share the use of the word Phantasia/Fantasia! Both full of medieval fantasy cliches as well. And when it comes to music, both Aviators and the movie's iconic song shares the same key! also one of the few times I arranged something with a major key.
Musically this was initially meant to be mostly like happy power metal, but as soon as Nikki (Jett Swole) recorded guitars, that started to sound closer to... happy punk rock instead. A change of vibe I'm not gonna oppose, as it totally fits the high energy and mood of the song and the bizarre and comedy elements of the video.
I'd say I also took some influence from 2000s music doujin artists like Akineko, I-Chu and SHO. Especially the choice of lead synths and the programmed drums. It's a vibe I personally love and grew up with and a sound I somewhat aspire for.
Anyways, I hope you like this weird thing. I wanted to add more cool stuff to the video and get a better mix for the music, but I think all is fine enough as it is. This project was a chaos full of misfortune and unexpected turns of events in the middle of its process, so it feels like a long journey, and it feels great to finally see this thing done and release to the world, however little.
To end this, I also want to dedicate this to my uncle. I have plenty of cool memories of talking to him about how much I love this game when I was a kid, and he was a huge fan of The Neverending Story and 80s stuff. Who knows, maybe he'd like this, if here were still here. Thanks for all the nice moments and stuff!
