The producers and co-creators of the Unpacked Podcast present a special series 10 part series Shoulder to Shoulder. Shoulder to Shoulder is co-hosted by  Evan Dewald, Tara Linsley and Kevin Castanherio unpacking the relationship between the church and the LGTBQ+ community with ex-pastors, inclusive churches, thought leaders, and LGBTQ+ members. Episodes drop weekly on Tuesdays.

Evan, Tara and Kevin get curious not critical to have conversations around a more inclusive way forward for marginalized communities and faith to come together. We talk to real-life people (including our stories!) who by living inclusively lead to exclusion from the church. You won't want to miss the stories of LGTBQ+ people coming out and discovering who they are. Together, we get curious to learn about belonging, talk about why taking a stand or defending the outcast is hard, how churches move to be affirming of LGTBQ+ members, what it takes to create safe and diverse environments and how we can care for LGTQ+ people and children.

The goal is not to change your mind, but we are here to challenge that we can disagree and still love. We can disagree and include. We can disagree and stand up for the marginalized and take responsibility for harm. And there is room for all in this space as we come together.  As all content under Unpacked, we aim to have conversations that grow in self-awareness and help our audience improve relationships at work and home. Using the lens of the enneagram and storytelling we unpack the messiness of life because we believe that's where we find growth.

This week on Unpacked we are chatting with Wakefield Brewster, Poet, Participant, Producer and Promoter in Canada’s poetry and spoken word communities since  1999. He is a Black man born and raised in Toronto, by parents hailing from the island of Beautiful Barbados, and he has resided in Calgary since 2006. For 21 years Wakefield has spent fiercely and ferociously spearheading Poetry and Spoken Word into every single circle of society he can infiltrate. He has spoken across Canada, and several States, and chats with us about his life story, mental health and the connection to poetry, speaking in classrooms and finding healing and hope in recovery from addiction. Wakefield shares a reading for us at the end of the episode so listen to the end! Wakefield is a community builder through engaging in volunteering, leadership, and mentorship for youth and through the arts. He is an active advocate for literacy and the humanities; Healing arts & alternative medicine; alcoholism & addictions; mental wellness & recovery.

This week on Unpacked we are chatting with Mel Cornforth, Founder and Owner of The Movement by Mel. Mel has trained in dance fitness and leads choreography-based classes. Mel shares her story of training to be a nurse and becoming a mom Mel found herself in search for more. After years of struggling to accept her body, navigating the identity change of becoming a mom and feeling like her nursing career wasn't as fulfilling anymore she took a leap to start the Movement. We talk entrepreneurship, motherhood, body positivity and how the Movement has become a space to heal body, mind and soul.  The Movement started as a way for me to connect with others through movement, music, and conversation. A way to grow a community that values authentic connection, vulnerability, growth, and all that is this life. It's repetitive choreography set to songs that combine fitness and creating meaningful connections with yourselves.

Joan is trained by the Haden Institute & Mount Carmel Spiritual Centre to practice Spiritual Direction.  She is in a same-gender marriage to a recently retired Anglican priest and is the mother of two adult sons. Joan shares her story of coming out and working in the faith community, her experiences and her realization of her calling to be a spiritual director in order to create a safe place for members, allies and family, of the LGBTQ+ community.

This week on Unpacked Evan and Tara chat about the process of growth through the lens of enneagram stances. We share why you need to know your enneagram stance and how to discover it.  The stances influence how you interact with others and often we are prone to one. Evan and Tara share each stance the gifts and the tension they bring and the growth path towards healing. The next layer of using stances is knowing where you start and understanding what happens when you are in a season of disorder. We use Richard Rohr's theory of transformation - order-disorder-reorder to reflect on how each stance behaves and how you paying attention to your dominant stance can lead to growth and healing.  We share how you can use each energy in your relationships and workplaces to uncover greater depth and health.
