  • USMLE Step 1 | Game Day

The day is just around the corner…You may sleep worse than a kid on Christmas Eve, and you’ll definitely spend more money than you spent on your College Spring Break. However, you are a few clicks away from being #StepDONE! Take a listen for how to manage stress on test day and what life looks like after you take the USMLE Step 1 exam. Believe in yourself! We do.

    Cleanup

10:15 - The Prometric-offered practice test contains 3 sections of 40 questions each (120 total).

33:30 - Anyone who tests between May 5 and “Mid-June” will get their score back on July 10. They did not define “mid-June” so if anyone tests after “mid-June” their score should arrive about 4 weeks after test date. All score reports are released on Wednesdays.

Other - The Step 1 exam includes experimental questions that will not count toward your actual score. NBME does not disclose the exact number of experimental questions.

  • How to Get In-State Tuition

“If you’re having money problems, I feel bad for you, son. I got 99 problems but [becoming an Ohio resident for tuition purposes] ain’t one” - JAY-Z (probably)

Whether you’re a current M1, a prospective student, or an upperclassman who missed the train, listen in to this episode to gain valuable knowledge about the Ohio resident reclassification process. Director of Financial Services and all-around good guy, John Stiles, walks us through the process and outlines some pro-tips and common pitfalls to avoid. You won’t want to miss it!

  • USMLE Step 1 | Dedicated

You're more than committed at this point. You're dedicated. In this episode, Zach and Kevin sit down with UCCOM M3 Ethan Schimmoeller to talk about dedicated studying for Step 1. Ethan walks us through a daily, weekly, and overall schedule for Step 1 studying. He shares important lessons he learned, things that surprised him, and his favorite step 1 studying snack (particularly high yield).

    Cleanup:

0:00- Ethan’s plan worked well for him, and we think the principles he discusses are very helpful, but no single schedule will work for everyone. The average UC student studies 10-15 hours per day during dedicated and many take off half-days instead of full days. Do whatever you are most comfortable with because you know yourself best!

    14:00 – 90 secs per question on Step 1

29:00 – Micro and pharmacology are no longer the lowest performing content areas per the class of 2019 and 2020

34:00 – Ethan was not actually proud that MS was his lowest grade; we support putting your best effort forward in MS, but also support a robust Step 1 study schedule during this time as well

41:00 – you cannot bring your pet to step 1 exam; however, you can bring these items to test day if you have specific medical needs (https://www.usmle.org/test-accommodations/PIEs.html)

1:03:00 – this episode is NOT actually sponsored by Pathoma, we just really love it

  • USMLE Step 1 | Pre-Dedicated

In this episode, we explore "pre-dedicated" studying for the USMLE Step 1 exam. This is a challenging but important part of preparation for Step 1. When should you start? How should you study? How do you balance GER with studying for Step 1? What is a CBSE? How many times can I visit Dr. Pandya before she gets sick of me? To answer these questions, we pick the brain of our co-host, Robbie Daulton, an M3 at UCCOM.

Resources: Click here for a customizable schedule for Step 1 studying in both pre-dedicated and dedicated periods. Popular study resources with section checklists are included as separate tabs. Dates of UCCoM exams and other important events have already been populated into the schedule. Enjoy!

Cleanup: NBME practice exams cost $60, not $20 as stated. The Class of 2020’s final Step 1 average was 241, not 242 (a preliminary value). Still incredible, though!
