This episode, RoShawn and I mostly like this story, but it's sort of weird because I was uncomfortable with just how familiar this story of mass revenge by a young adult has become in our society...and this was recorded before the shootings in Ohio and Texas over this past week. Oof.

This is the final episode of coverage of White Night and I'm really surprised at how much more I enjoyed this book on the reread compared with what a slog it felt like going through it alone. I'm delighted with RoShawn's reactions to some of the revelations this episode, but of course the major reveal is the fact that Lasciel is no longer in Harry's head. That was the last thing she ever expected.

This episode, RoShawn and I focus a lot on how awesome Ramirez's magic is, and how much it stands out as different while still being effective and dangerous, and in some cases, full of surprises. I really love the moment when Harry thinks Ramirez's aim was off, only to realize that he's basically liquefied the damn floor under Madrigal's feet. And that awesome sword! I could understand if Harry was more jealous of it after getting to see it in action against enchantments in this way.
I am really really excited to wrap this book because there's some great stuff still to come up, and I can't wait to see what RoShawn thinks. Thanks for listening!

I picked this illustration of Ramirez because it's always been a little difficult for me to picture him, and I thought this was a nice capture of both his badassery and his sort of ordinariness. RoShawn and I spend a lot of time talking about him this episode.

This series of chapters we get a couple big game-changers. First of all, there's the amazing showdown between Elaine and the scavis, which leads to an interesting discussion between RoShawn and I about the nature of mental illness and what it's like to have that kind of destructive voice in your head.

But then, in a moment that kind of blew RoShawn's mind, we have the conversation between Harry and Lasciel that really makes it seem like maybe Lasciel (or at least, this version of her) isn't as eternal and immutable as we thought.

Hello everyone! I don't know if I've used this illustration of John Marcone yet, but if I have it's been a while so here it is again. There's precious little artwork of him out there, and most of what I have found fails to convey any real sense of menace or intelligence. This one is the best I've seen, and I picture him like this when I read.
These chapters are the ones in which Dresden soulgazes Helen Beckett and realizes that she's not a shill...which leads him to realize who the actual threat really is. As he heads out to track down "Priscilla", he discovers Molly in the backseat of the car, and exacts a harsh lesson on her that Karrin clearly does NOT approve of.

Hey there everyone! I have to say, I'm always surprised when I start going through Dresden Files artwork and I realize how few illustrations there are of certain characters, and that happened again with Elaine. I just thought that she had such cool weapons and was in a few really sticky situations with Harry that would look great visually, that there had to be a few out there, but really there's only two. So I chose this one, which includes some other side characters that we've met already, and depicts her with her awesome green taser-chain.
In these chapters, Harry spends some time recovering from the injuries he sustained at the lake, but not as much time as you'd think due to Elaine's reiki skills. They head out to check on the Ordo, and it turns out that things have taken a rather tragic turn. And it looks like Helen Beckett was the person to be suspicious of after all.

I really like this piece because Harry is about to cast some fire magic and Lasciel is clinging to him in a way that is really similar to the one described in these chapters when she's translating. The illustration isn't specifically about Camp Kaboom in New Mexico, but it lines up so well!
These chapters are the ones in which we find out how dark Harry can get when his temper and righteous fury are let off the leash. When RoShawn and I talk about it, we're kind of horrified for a minute, but then we stop and think about the kind of rage we carry around and we're like, "Oh shit, yeah. I get it."

This episode Harry is finally able to put Little Chicago to some real use, and gets down to business with tracking down Grey Cloak using a pretty nifty spell. Not only can he pinpoint the man's location, he can spy on the guy in real time while he has a conversation, and even manages to follow him all the way to a second meeting.
This does not go as planned, though, because guess what! Cowl is still alive (Harry thinks that's Cowl, anyway) and he is able to not only detect Harry bu also throws some really strong magic at him that might have taken his head right off if the house wasn't warded. This is serious shit.
