Unsung Horrors

It's that special time of year filled with red herrings, questionable investigative skills, and ridiculous endings. Yes, it's Giallo January once again and we're kicking off this year's festivities with the film that is loosely part of the School Girls in Peril trilogy with What Have You Done to Solange and What Have They Done to Your Daughters. Come ride the roller coaster with us as we discuss Red Rings of Fear. Follow this podcast on Instagram, Twitter, Slasher, and Facebook @unsunghorrors. In this special bonus episode, we're joined by Lars Nilsen, head programmer for Austin Film Society and author of Warped & Faded: Weird Wednesday and the Birth of the American Genre Film Archive. We discuss films from select Weird Wednesday screenings over the years, the experience of seeing these films with a crowd in a theatre, and much more. For our last regular episode of the year, Lance is taking us down a true crime path with a different adaptation of the life of Henry Lee Lucas in 1985's Confessions of a Serial Killer. If you've seen Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, this will be familiar territory for you, but a standout performance from Robert A. Burns definitely makes this worth a watch. We're bringing the heat during winter with the desert slasher, Mirage. A truly independent and unsung horror movie, this has only seen a video release in the UK, which is a shame because it has great characters and gore along with its unique setting. Hear our thoughts about this forgotten gem as well as our double feature picks to go with it. Enjoy the show? Consider leaving us a rating/review on Apple or Podchaser. Or better yet, tell a friend! We're continuing No Rules November where we ignore our rule of fewer than 1K views on Letterboxd with Madman! Sing and grunt along with us as we discuss how stupid the characters are but how much we love them. Don't say his name! In this special bonus episode, we're going through our picks in 31 different film categories from our annual Horror Gives Back charity challenge, this year benefiting The Trevor Project. For each horror movie we watched in October, we donated $1 or more to the charity, and thanks to all of the other people who participated, we raised nearly $1200 this year! This month we're breaking our "fewer than 1000 views on Letterboxd" rule to bring you a couple of our favorites. Erica's pick is a Spanish horror movie about killer kids from a director who seems to really like kids and has an odd way of showing it. We'll discuss the impact of the archival footage at the beginning of the film, effective daylight horror, and, of course, child death. This week we're doing something a little different as we are joined by writer Joe Augustyn, screenwriter of Night Angel and creator of the Night of the Demons franchise. We'll also discuss his latest book, Ghostwriter, and his related experiences of the paranormal. Episode correction: Joe messaged us after recording to let us know that Steve Johnson (SFX) worked with Rick Baker, not Dick Smith.
