Unsung Horrors

This week we honor the late, great Henry Silva with a discussion of one of the few movies in which he had a leading role, William Fruet's Trapped, aka Baker County USA. We delve into Silva's career, what made him so charismatic, and lightly touch on the hicksploitation subgenre and what is so terrifying about it. Also mentioned in the episode is a series of Mexican horror films playing at the Academy Museum in October, curated by former guest Abraham Castillo Flores. This week we're channeling fall vibes and the spirits of dead witches in Ulli Lommel's The Devonsville Terror. We discuss the director's career and common threads in his other films plus the formula he employs that may put some people off. This week we jump into nunsploitation with a film atypical to the subgenre with Flavia the Heretic, starring Florinda Bolkan. While it shares many of the same characteristics of many films in this category, Flavia takes it to a new level with themes that still hit close to home today. Ian Jane from Rock! Shock! Pop! joins us once again for Shawgust to discuss a Shaw Brothers fantasy/action/horror movie that may take a couple of viewings to fully comprehend. Or maybe watching at 0.75 speed. However you watch it, don't blink or you may miss some of the elements that make this film great including bursting stomachs and a new way to make your kebabs. It's that special time of year again when we cover Shaw Brothers horror movies! If you came to this episode looking for an explanation of this film, well... This week, we tackle self-proclaimed outsider director Giulio Questi and his beautifully confounding film about a spiritual coming of age. Laced with taboo subjects, stunning cinematography, and an unforgettable score, Arcana sticks with you (if you can stick with it). We love Italian horror here at Unsung Horrors, especially when it tells the story of a love between a woman and her phone. Famed director Ruggero Deodato can do much more than just cannibal movies, as evidenced by this late 80s erotic thriller. You may never answer your phone again!
