The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation says no approval has been granted for the demolition of the iconic Eyethu Cinema in Soweto in Johannesburg. This comes after contradicting reports that the structure will be demolished to make way for the erection of a mall in its place. Situated in Mofolo, the cinema was opened in 1969 by businessman and former mayor of Soweto, Ephraim "Mshengu" Tshabalala. The department says an application was submitted to the Provincial Heritage Resources Authority of Gauteng for the demolishing of the structure but a decision has not be made.
