The ANC s Umkhonto we Sizwe veterans association has come out to defend president Jacob Zuma amid increasing perceptions on social media that he is to blame for the ANC's poor performance in 2016 local government elections. The ANC dropped below the 60 percent mark, garnering about 54 percent nationally and failed to retain an outright majority in the metros of Tshwane, Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Nelson Mandela Bay. It also failed to reclaim the city of cape town and there are hung municipalities in their traditional strongholds across the country. The governing party needs coalitions to govern. As the 2016 Olympics continue in Rio de Janeiro, for many poor communities the Games are a reminder of sacrifices they've had to make. Next door to the main Olympic Park is a collection of 20 small dwellings, newly created for a handful of locals who refused leave the area when developers were building the Olympic venues. In Zimbabwe, leaders of former liberation fighters group have boycotted the annual Heroes commemorations. The war veterans say its in protest against their ill-treatment by president Mugabe, his party and government. The boycott is latest reflection of the strained relations between the president and his former allies. It's the first time that war veterans leaders have refused to attend the event, which honours soldiers who died fighting colonialism in the 1970s civil war. Shingai Nyoka reports

The National Union of Mineworkers has vowed to defend about 2 200 Eskom wokers who embarked on a wild cat strike. Eskom says it will take action against the workers. Eskom workers are not allowed to go on strike since theirs is an essential service. The NUM is at loggerheads with Eskom management over wage increases. Tshepo Mongoai reports...

The fees commission that was established by President Jacob Zuma in January this year following violent student protests will begin with public hearings tomorrow (Wednesday). Independent Candidates in Tlokwe municipality, in Potchefstroom in the North West, are preparing to file court papers with the Electoral Court against the IEC. They say that certain voters in Tlokwe were denied the right to vote in last week's municipal elections as a result of the amalgamation of Tlokwe and Ventersdorp municipalities. The merger led to some wards and boundaries being changed by the Municipal Demarcation Board. Patrick Dintwa reports...

A couple who fell victim to the Brusson home loan scheme say it's unfair for ABSA bank to reinstate their home loan even though they had already paid it off. The Moore's are against a bid by ABSA to get the Constitutional Court to reinstate the original bonds. They had taken out a loan with a company called Brusson Finance, but unwittingly sold their home in the process. Senior Constitutional Court Reporter Candice Nolan reports.

The Independent Electoral Commission has declared this year's local government elections as free and fair. About 26 million prospective voters went to the municipal polls which were fiercely contested. For the first time in the country's post-apartheid history, about 200 political parties and over 61-thousand candidates participated in the polls.
