For centuries in Ireland, a sickly or unusual child raised a dark question: had the fairies swapped it for one of their own? 

The changeling is one of the oldest and cruellest beliefs in Irish folklore, and we trace it from the traits once used to spot one, through to rumours that even King Charles I had been swapped as an infant, and the versions of the same story found across Europe, from Scandinavian trolls to Germany's Wechselbalg and Slavic Boginki.

We also look at what the belief did to real people, including the 1895 killing of Bridget Cleary in County Tipperary under Ireland's "fairy defence," and the 1928 disappearance of Walter Collins in Los Angeles, later dramatised in the film Changeling.
