SUSPECT ARRESTED IN POLK COUNTY FOR STEALING MULTIPLE VEHICLESNews Release from Polk Co. Sheriff's OfficeOn 11-3-2015 at about 11:25 a.m. the Polk County Sheriff's Office was notified of a stolen vehicle, reported to be a purple 1976 Chevrolet Corvette, from the residence at 9330 Grand Ronde Rd, Grand Ronde, Polk County, Oregon. Deputies from the Sheriff's Office responded to the location and as they were taking the stolen vehicle report they were advised of a stolen vehicle in progress report from the residence at 8253 Fire Hall Road, Grand Ronde, Polk County, Oregon. Deputies from the Sheriff's Office assisted by police officers from the Grand Ronde Tribal Police responded to the Fire Hall Road location where Clifford Sab ey reported that he found a male subject who drove away from his residence in a blue 2001 Dodge Ram pickup belonging to Mr. Sabey. Mr. Sabey gave chase in his white Chrysler minivan and cut off the suspect. Mr. Sabey then confronted the male, who ended up getting into Mr. Sabey's van and attempted to drive away. Mr. Sabey was able to block the van with the Dodge pickup to keep the male from driving off in the van. The man then ran northbound toward the creek on Fire Hall Road. Law Enforcement spread out and searched the area and located a male matching the description of the suspect in the stolen vehicle reports. The male was walking along Andy Riggs Road wearing jeans and no shirt, but he was wet. When confronted by Law Enforcement the man ran. Deputies and Officers chased the suspect north along Grand Ronde road until he was taken into custody. The man was identified as Tanner Abbott, DOB/ 6-21-1984, from Willamina. Deputies interviewed Abbott who admitted that he stole his father's pickup and television from Willamina and driving it to Grand Ronde. He then stole a bicycle from a shed on Grand Ronde Rd and rode it to where he stole the Chevrolet Corvette. He then drove the Corvette to 9615 Grand Ronde Road. He then walked to A Ackerson Road, off Grand Ronde Road, where he stole a white Ford F250 pickup. Mr. Abbott then drove the pickup to Fire Hall Road where he stole Mr. Sabey's pickup. Mr. Abbott gave two fake names to Deputies when he was being interviewed and was found to have arrest warrants for Contempt of Court from Linn County. Mr. Abbott was lodged at the Polk County Jail and charged with the following crimes:* Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle (4 counts) * Burglary II * Theft III * Giving False Information to Police * Driving While Suspended (Felony) * Criminal Mischief II

HELICOPTER CRASHES DURING CHRISTMAS TREE HARVEST (PHOTO)News Release from Polk Co. Sheriff's OfficeOn 11-2-2015 at about 1424 hours a helicopter doing Christmas tree harvesting at 21350 Highway 22, Sheridan, Polk County, Oregon crashed. Reports from witnesses on the scene indicate that there was some sort of engine failure causing the pilot, later identified as Blane Hayes of Applebee Aviation, to lose control of the aircraft. The helicopter spun around as it descended to the ground coming to rest after damaging the rear tail section of the aircraft as well as the landing sk ids. Medics and fire personnel from the West Valley Fire Department as well as deputies from the Polk County Sheriff's Office initially responded. When medics arrived Mr. Hayes indicated that he was uninjured and refused any medical assistance. The employees from Applebee Aviation who were at the scene then loaded into two vehicle and left prior to deputies from PCSO arriving on scene. The NTSB and FAA were notified of the crash. FAA investigators responded to the scene and they are investigating the incident. At this point it is unknown why employees of the aviation company left the scene of the accident so quickly after refusing medical assistance. The NTSB has been in contact with Applebee Aviation and they are cooperating with the investigation. Applebee Aviation is known as AAI according to their website. They are based out of Banks, Oregon.

The Newberg city council is looking seriously at the possibility of contracting with Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue, and that could be the first step to merging Newberg Fire and TVF & R. Councilors heard an hour long presentation last (mon) night from Tualatin Valley Fire Chief MIke Dike and Deputy Fire Chief Dustin Morrow.    Dike says a larger department would be more efficient and would provide Newberg staff with more advancement opportunities.         There is still a lot to discuss, but both sides seem very willing to discuss it.   Both agree  they would need to determine it was a good operational, political, and financial fit.   The first step would be to have the city contract with Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue for up to six years for fire and rescue, if that works then annexation could be on the table.   Councilors voted unanimously to to proceed with a discovery phase and allow the drafting of an initial fire and rescue services contract draft.  Dike told Newberg councilors that all Newberg firefighters would be kept and that Newberg's current fire chief would have a leadership role in the city's firefighting services.  Dike says any contractural combination of the departments would be done in such a way that it could be un done if it doesn't work, and that firefighters would have their old positions or better positions back.Tualatin Valley Fire is asking the city to make a decision by February to allow a joint operaton to begin by July.

NO MISCONDUCT FOUND POLICE CHIEF CLEARED OF ALLEGATIONSNews Release from Newberg-Dundee Police Dept.The City of Newberg has concluded its review into whether the Police Department, and in particular, Chief Brian Casey, had engaged in any misconduct. The City has found no misconduct by the Police Department or by Chief Casey. The alleged misconduct brought forward by former City Manager, Jacque Betz, was the basis for placing Chief Casey on administrative leave pending an assessment of the Police Department. The allegations included: Hostile work environment Verbal abuse Firearms qualifications deficiencies Excessive force Modification of use of force forms Modification of a shotgun for personal use The City determined there was no misconduct concerning the above allegations. The review did highlight the need for clear City policies regarding Department Head's use of City equipment. That is an issue that will be explored more and addressed in the future. City Manager Pro Tem, Steve Rhodes, said, "We are glad to put these issues to rest and are confident Chief Casey will continue his great work for the City of Newberg." Chief Casey responded similarly, "I am relieved these lingering issues have been concluded. While I knew that there was no merit to these allegations, having them finally resolved is like a weight being lifted." "The City Council realizes that this has been a difficult time for the Chief and his family and wish to express our support of Chief Casey," Mayor Bob Andrews said. "The Chief's twenty plus years of service to the community has been outstanding and greatly appreciated by the Council and residents of Newberg and we look forward to the continued dedicated service of Chief Casey". The City is awaiting the results of an assessment of the Police Department which was supported by the Police union as well as the Police Administration. "The assessment is a valuable tool to determine what things the Police Department is doing well and areas where it may improve," said Rhodes. Chief Casey added, "I am excited about seeing the assessment results and look forward to the opportunity to improve the Police Department in any way I can. We do great work for the City and want to make sure Police Department employees feel the same about coming to work".
