What happens when a concert culture journalist gets backstage at one of the most legendary venues in America and starts wondering if she’s seeing too much?

On a backstage tour of the Grand Ole Opry, I found myself caught between wanting to see everything and wondering whether pulling back the curtain takes away some of the mystery that makes live music so powerful. Then I stepped onto that famous wooden circle and the story became unexpectedly personal.

My parents had been in this same room decades before me, young and dating, long before I existed. Suddenly, I wasn’t only standing inside country music history. I was standing inside a piece of my own.
