On the outskirts of Boston, a warehouse comes alive on a frigid night. Artists and bohemians huddle together, drawn in by live music in one of the city's best-kept secrets. 

Journey to The Loft in Boston, a DIY artist rehearsal and performance space that serves as a sanctuary for experimental sounds. We'll shadow Audrey Ryan, the venue's owner (a talented musician herself), during her preparations and performance for the concert and spend time with a group of Boston bohemians to gain insight into the significance and preciousness of this venue in a city that is grappling with the loss of artist spaces.

Listen to my audio field note from the Bangor Savings Amphitheater where the bands Jax, MAX, and Big Time Rush reignite love's sparkle within me and I can't help but ponder: is this concert the culmination of my healing journey through heartbreak, or the beginning of a new love cycle?

Heartbreak is a regenerative journey that takes you down many emotional paths. Depression, displacement—for me, denial that I would ever want to be in love again.

And during each stage of the process, the perfect song would seem to serendipitously appear and like a lyrical blanket, insulate my cold heart.

Starting with Carol King lamenting, "It's too Late," transitioning into Little Dragon’s, “No Love.” Then it was Peter Tosh bellowing, “Why Must I Cry,” and as of late, “Last Goodbye” by Jeff Buckley.  And many, many, other songwriters were there for me too. 

Yet, these songs are a double-edged sword inadvertently reinforcing despair. The truth is, they made me kind of calloused towards love too. But when I venture into the Amphitheater at the Bangor Waterfront to photograph contemporary pop stars JAX, MAX, and Big Time Rush, I feel giddy and carefree and I start to see love through a sparkling lens of optimism again.I can’t help but wonder, was this pop concert the culmination of my healing journey, or rather, the start of a new love cycle?

Phoenix was once a layover city. Today, thanks to venues like Crescent Ballroom, its concert culture has transformed the once-barren downtown into a live music destination.

In this episode of Concert CAST, Kyle Lamont takes you inside two iconic Phoenix spaces. First, we hit Crescent Ballroom—a 1910s garage turned community hub that serves incredible Mexican cuisine—to talk with former Lotus guitarist Mike Rempel about the creative circuit between the stage and the crowd, and how a venue can fundamentally affect a performance.

Then, we head to the Warehouse District staple Last Exit Live to hang out with Dead Winter Carpenters. These "road warriors" share the reality of the grind, logging 50,000 miles a year in pursuit of creating lasting sonic connections.

The episode also features legendary architect Will Bruder, designer of the iconic Burton Barr Library, who offers a masterclass on the "emotional architecture" of gathering places—plus a surreal 1960s story involving fringed suede boots.
