  • Military Humor & Freud: A Tribute to Gil Ott (Part 1)

Episode 32 of Veteran Et Cetera delves into my audio essay into "military humor". Mike Kim discusses the dynamic of military humor and remembers the humor of Gil Ott, a classmate from Yale who was also a combat veteran (Vietnam). Mike ties in Freud's concept of therapeutic humor. Also, there is information about Freud's case study called "The Ratman" involving a soldier who could have benefitted from humor as a more advanced level of coping with military stress.

  • More Than Entertainment: A Review of Fox TV Series "Special Forces: World's Toughest Test

On this episode (Episode 29) of Veteran Et Cetera, the host, Mike Kim, provides a review of the Fox Television new military reality show "Special Forces: World's Toughest Test". With a smashing 2.7 million viewers last Wednesday for episode One "Test of Character". This is a relevant television show for civilians, veterans , and active duty personnel. Listen to this audio essay and let me explain how this show is not just pulp mass media hype. Instead, the show provides small windows into military life.

Rudy Reyes (ex-Marine Recon/Sniper) is lead military guide along with Sergeant Major Mark Billingham (Britain's elite of elite SAS Special Air Service), Remi Adeleke (elite Navy SEAL Frogman), and Jason Fox (SBS Special Boat Service Team Leader and British Royal Commando). This elite cohort of training cadre lead 16 entertainment celebrities like Dr. Drew and baseball hall of famer Mike Piazza are shocked into getting a taste of the intensity of elite forces military training. Each Wednesday at 8pm EST, you can view the trials and triumphs of the 16 participants. I pose the question: How can a military reality tv show produce important meanings tied to real military training narratives for society? Check out the show!

  • A Deeper Meaning: The Marine Corps Boot Camp Gender Integration Study

This episode of Veteran Et Cetera examines the US Marine Corps' 18 month study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh in 2020. The media has been presenting the study with myths that have caused political division in the military with fears of a "wokeism" in the military. There was a 2015 study sponsored by the US Dep of Defense but riddled with many scholars claiming that it was biased. The study was never signed off by Military top leadership. It was not dated, etc. The 2020 study has more reputable scholars tied to an evidence-based , peer-reviewed research study to understand the challenges and the present state of gender integration for US Marine Boot Camp. The Marine Corps due to legislation must integrate boot camp by 2025. Your host Mike Kim goes beyond Marine Corps Times and New York Post headlines.

  • Lived Experiences In Creating Veteran Legacy

Veteran Legacy is a topic not often discussed by our society. In todays' short essay, your host Mike Kim talks about how veterans create their own legacy through the lives they choose to live post military.

That's because most veterans and civilians are caught up with the headlines tied to veterans and not caught up with actual lived experiences of veterans. We should not forget the past, but to situate the past with the present. This might be a new way to better understanding veterans.

Are you the best possible veteran you can be towards yourself, towards your family, friends, and larger community?
