Veteran Et Cetera

To be an Oath Keeper? Or is it to be a Veteran Called to Honor the Oath?

This episode provides an audio essay about the meanings of an Oath for Veterans. As a veteran do we keep the oath, or honor the Oath of service? Do we still have an Oath as a veteran? With all the Oath Keeper news tied to January 6th 2021, maybe we should go deeper in understanding the Oath of military service in the US armed forces.

Curious about the Veteran's mind? What is the vet thinking?

Mike Kim provides an audio essay about Veteran Consciousness and delves into the perceptions of the veteran as a path into understanding "Veteran Consciousness". And so, the Veteran's lived experiences, encounters, and memories are understood from the point of perception, and not universal generalizations made by those outside of the Veterans direct experience.

Sources for Mike Kim's concept of Veteran Consciousness are Merleau Ponty's "Phenomenology of Perception" (1945).

Mike's view on Veteran Consciousness might seem critical of others making attempts at understanding the mind of Veterans. The video below is a chat about the minds of Veterans and the many interpretations from mass media. The chat is between Mike and Emory University's Dr. Chris Eagle

Dakota Meyer, a Marine Infantryman & Sniper becomes a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient for his uncommon bravery in Afghanistan during the Battle of Ganjgal (September 8, 2009). Since then, Dakota Meyer has been interpreted as a man of many faces. This audio essay interprets Dakota from the eyes of Mike Kim, a philosopher of war.

The recent hit audio podcast show Blowback Season three: The Korean War has captured the ears of many. On this episode of Veteran Et Cetera my guest C. Derick Varn and I examine the Korean War using the hit Blowback podcast as a guide for a critical dialogue about one of the most gruesome modern wars, the Korean War (1950-1953).

Derick and I provide an analysis that adds information that is not mentioned in the Blowback podcast narrative about the Korean War.

C. Derick Varn is a poet, teacher, and arm-chair theorist. He used to be an expatriate but has returned to the US. He has worked as lecturer on English Literature, Composition, and Intercultural communication as well as a high school teacher in literature, writing, critical thinking and ethics. He was editor for Zero Books. His popular podcast Varn Vlog https://youtube.com/c/CDerickVarnVlog is a wealth of information for understanding the unfolding events, situations, ideologies, and personalities of this era. His other projects include: Parallax Vlog with J.G. Michaels of Parallax Views, No Royal Road with Regrettable Century, and Gaming Materialists with TIR's regular, Djene Bajalan.

This is an autoethnographic "self cultural study to be shared with the world" project for both of us as our lives/loved ones have been impacted by the Korean War. Listen to this episode and you understand...

On this episode of Veteran Et Cetera, Mike Kim has a chat with a profoundly unique veteran, Brian Delate. Brian Delate has been in over 47 movies and has been active in acting, directing and producing for the stage and cinema since his return from his combat duty in the Vietnam War. Brian is best known worldwide for portraying Walter Moore/Kirk Burbank in the 1998 Paramount film The Truman Show.

Brian's award winning movie "A Soldier's Heart" transcends most "war movies" by focusing on the invisible and visible wounds of war. His giving back to the vet community makes him one of the true contributors of veteran readjustment culture. His play "Memorial Day" is a pioneering work that addresses veteran suicide. Recently he was in This is not a War Story released in 2021.

On this episode of Veteran Et Cetera, Mike Kim discusses the overlooked aspects of the Battle of Mogadishu with Mike Kurth. Mike Kurth served as an Airborne Ranger with 3rd Ranger Battalion from 1991-1996. He is known for being a significant figure in the Battle of Mogadishu. Kurth has been portrayed in the movie Black Hawk Down and wrote about his Mogadishu experience in the highly acclaimed book The Battle of Mogadishu: Firsthand Accounts from the Men of Taskforce Ranger (2005).

The award winning documentary show Frontline provides this biography of Mike Kurth during the Battle of Mogadishu: He was a Helicopter Radio Operator for Sgt. Watson, Chalk III - Super Six Six. Basic mission was to update the Commander on their position and situation and keep Sergeant Watson in contact. Physically stayed with Sergeant Watson on all the missions, except the October 3rd -- had to be pulled for security as well as do the radio communications. He was 24 at the time of the ambush.

Mike Kurth is an influencer to many veterans and civilians as a member of GoRuck and many other veteran organizations and causes. When he is not helping vets, he excels in management for the bar and restaurant industry. Kurth comes from a long line of family members who served in the military.

We are pleased to have Mike Kurth share his narrative on Veteran Et Cetera.
