Filmmaker Anthony Cousins (SCARE PACKAGE, EVERYTIME WE MEET FOR ICE CREAM YOUR WHOLE FUCKING FACE EXPLODES, and the upcoming SCARE PACKAGE II: RAD CHAD’S REVENGE) joins the Video Monsters to discuss what we believe is one of the most undervalued entries in the Stephen King film canon, David Cronenberg’s THE DEAD ZONE (1983). The film notably eschews the overt body horror that Cronenberg was known for at the time to tell a cold, melancholy tale of a lonely man – played with brilliant subtlety by the legendary Christopher Walken – cursed with the gift of premonition. And yet, it may secretly be one of the most horrifying body horror films ever made…. just without all the blood and guts. So grab your cane, put on your peacoat, flip up the collar, look at yourself in the mirror, and slowly come to terms with the fact that none of us can ever be as cool as Christopher Walken. Then come break the ice with us as we discuss THE DEAD ZONE with special guest Anthony Cousins!

Theodore Schaefer (director, co-writer, producer for GIVING BIRTH TO A BUTTERFLY) joins the Video Monsters to discuss the Stephen King film that started it all, Brian De Palma’s CARRIE (1976)! It’s been noted often, including by King himself, that the surprise success of this film is the reason why King rocketed into superstardom. CARRIE is often cited as not only one of the greatest King adaptations, but one of the most iconic and influential horror films of all time. But how does it hold up today? Is this film actually a comedy? Is Carrie a supporting character in her own movie? Was Carrie’s mom right all along about her daughter being corrupted by the devil?! Writer/Director Wolfe MacReady checks into the Overlook Hotel with the Video Monsters to passionately defend the oft-maligned ABC television miniseries version of THE SHINING (1997), directed by Mick Garris and written by King himself. The series is clearly a product of its time and suffers from the limitations of 90s network television but – despite its shortcomings – it is an earnest, emotional work with moving performances that faithfully (sometimes a little TOO faithfully) adapts the more personal elements of the novel that were omitted from the Stanley Kubrick film. So take your medicine, trim the topiary, grab your croquet mallet, and meet us in Room 217 as we… wait, hold on. You passed it... No, it’s 217, not 237. You’ve gone too far. Turn back around and… yeah. There you go. OK, great. Where was I? Oh, right. Now that we’re all here, it’s time to haunt the halls of THE SHINING with special guest, Wolfe MacReady!
