This year’s theme underlines the importance of being prepared for food safety incidents, no matter how mild or severe they can be.Food safety incidents are situations where there is a potential or confirmed health risk associated with food consumption. A food incident can happen, for example, due to accidents, inadequate controls, food fraud or natural events.While being ready to manage food safety incidents requires dedicated efforts from policymakers, food safety authorities, farmers and food business operators, consumers also can play an active role.Andiswa Zondi from the department of consumer sciences at UP joins us on the line now for more on food preparedness

Zain Johnson speaks to Carmen Stevens (one of SA’s first winemakers of colour) who in 2011 she established the Carmen Stevens Foundation. Through this foundation, Stevens provides food to children at schools in eleven communities in the Western Cape, which include Kraaifontein, Belhar and Elsies River. The initiative employs 42 women who prepare the food providing over 25 000 learners from 125 schools in the Western Cape with a nutritious breakfast and lunch.

International Hamburger Day may have gone unnoticed for many as it fell on the eve of our national elections, but the day did prompt Eighty20, South Africa’s leading consumer insights and data science firm, to unpack some interesting insights into the country's fast food dining habits. Using data from MAPS, a nationally representative survey of 20,000 people conducted by the MRF, the report highlights South Africa’s preferred protein choices and the top 10 fast food outlets.
