PROTEAS “JUST” MAKE WORLD CUP QUALIFICATION
South Africa have sealed the final automatic qualification spot for the World Cup
after Ireland's hopes of pipping them were dashed on Tuesday when their first one-
day international against Bangladesh was washed out.
South Africa played their last ODI series in the qualification period that ends this
week against the Netherlands and had beaten them 2-0 to move up to eighth in the
World Cup Super League.
Their hopes of playing in the tournament in India this year hinged on Ireland not
beating Bangladesh 3-0 in the ODI series in Chelmsford, with net run rate also coming
into play.
Had the Proteas fallen below Ireland in the standings, they would have faced a 10-
team World Cup Qualifier series – including the West Indies and Sri Lanka – in
Zimbabwe in June and July.
The biggest positive of qualifying directly for the World Cup is that Proteas players
not involved in The Hundred in England or Major League Cricket in the US will be able
to take a proper break before Australia’s white-ball tour of South Africa in late
August and September.

The SASKO Siyasizana community initiative has launched the ‘Play Better’ campaign
which aims to build, restore and upgrade 1000 playgrounds throughout Mzansi in
2023.
Through the power of positive play, the campaign is targeting early childhood
development (ECD) and foundation phase age group children with a strong anti-
bullying message by promoting active and positive play.
SASKO has been at the centre of communities since 1930, and the SASKO Siyasizana
initiative has always focused on building a solid foundation for our nation’s children.
Siyasizana, which means ‘we are helping each other’ previously provided pre-primary
and primary school children with reading books and educational material. This latest
project aims to build on this legacy by promoting social skills development.
The Play Better campaign forms part of SASKO’s “people who care make things
better” brand repositioning which launched last year. The initiative is on a mission to
rollout 100 playgrounds in phase 1 through a consumer call to action of nominating a
school of their choice that they believe deserves a playground upgrade.

joint most teams in the league, tied with Gauteng with five.
The beginning of the season saw Richards Bay surging toward the top of the league

The Diadora Jozi Cup is a community based winter cricket club competition spanning
various age groups from under 11 through to the Veterans group which includes
both boys and girls, men and women. The competition is played with a pink ball,
coloured clothing and takes place at community club facilities across the Central
Gauteng district with all finals being played at the DP World Wanderers.
Now in its second year, the aim of the tournament is to grow the base of community
clubs, blending the wisdom of the old with the aspiration of today’s youth, and all
with the backing of the powerful Diadora brand.
The Diadora Jozi Cup overall club winner will take home R 25 000, with runners-up
bagging R 15 000.
The finals will take place over two weekends, namely 10, 11 June and the Youth Day
weekend: 16-18 June, with the Jozi Cup Awards ceremony set for 18 June 2023.
About Jenna:
19-year-old Jenna Evans, finished at Steyn City School in Johannesburg and is from
Jeppe Quondam cricket club. She started club cricket at the age of 13 after making
the Gauteng Lions under 13 A girls team and at 16 she was called up to the DP Lions
Women’s team. At the Lions Cricket Awards, she won Best Newcomer of the Season
2021/2022 as well as Player of the 2021 Blackwidow T20 tournament – as the leading
run scorer. She has flourished as captain of her cricket club, making it to the semi-
finals in the Diadora Jozi T20 Cup as well as being the 2nd top run scorer of the
tournament. She was selected for the inaugural u19 women’s World Cup held in SA.
