The world of Information Technology has changed a lot during my career, but in some ways, many things remain the same. There are still mainframes in use, and plenty of jobs. Lots of companies maintain their infrastructure in data centers, even though some are turning to private clouds for their infrastructure. There are plenty of jobs in that area as well.

There is a trend to consolidate resources into a bucket and then allocate those as needed for various applications and services. This is what mainframes do, albeit at a very high degree of reliability (and cost). The cloud seeks to replicate this, not with high reliability, but with redundancy, expecting systems to fail. In fact, plenty of the data centers these days involve a lot of similar hardware systems tied together with software, with failed systems being left in place rather than replaced.

SQL Server is constantly growing and changing, as are most database platforms. There are lots of platform changes, among them enhancements to the T-SQL language. Microsoft has added window functions, in-memory structures, the ability to execute code in other languages, and more. Some of these features are well built and some need more work. What's always interesting to me is what actually gets built and what doesn't.

There was an article recently on evaluating features in an RDBMS, and the article uses the JSON data type in Google's Big Query as an example. The evaluation is interesting, examining whether the feature actually helps the user, or if it is mostly marketing. In this case, the feature is outside of the "normal" conventions of the platform,  but it is useful.

A saw a tweet from Brent Ozar about USB ports on slot machines to charge your devices. There are also wireless charging pads. Convenient, but also potential security problems, especially for IT workers that hold privileged access to code or data.

Please, don't use public USB ports for charging a device. You never know if there is any data access taking place. Yes, I know that most phones ask you to approve things, but have you ever hit the wrong button on your UI? Know how to turn it off? How quickly would data move or malware install? Just don't plug in.

I saw a question posted recently on what data is included in a full SQL Server database backup. I hadn't seen that question in some time, but the post was a good reminder that this is not an intuitive concept, and new data professionals might not understand how a full backup works. If you don't know, you should do a little research (and write a #SQLNewBlogger post for yourself).

The way a SQL Server backup works, either with an on-premises install or the Azure SQL Database version, is well known and documented. Even if you can't make a "normal full backup" in Azure SQL Database, the process is the same. You don't have to run the backup, as Azure does that for you, but you can specify a restore and understand which data will be available in your restored database.

I caught this link in a Brent Ozar newsletter. It's a post from Alice Goldfuss noting she's on the market for hiring. Not that she's looking for a job, but rather, saying she's willing to talk to you if you want to hire her. Quite a bold announcement, but she's quite a talent that many organizations might want. I don't know that many of us could post something and have companies come find you, but I did like the list of items she lays out for a hiring conversation.

These are the types of questions that you might keep handy, even as notes, for your next interview. I've often had a series of questions like this that I ask when I go into an interview for a job. I've learned that I need to be curious and careful if I want a successful position for both me and the company. Both of us are trying to put our best foot forward, sometimes stretching the positives and minimizing the downsides. That means that both sides can be surprised later by how the relationship actually proceeds.

I'm not sure this blog that seems to talk about the problems of NoSQL databases in general makes a lot of sense. If you read the comments, you certainly see lots of complaints, but I also think the post isn't well written. It lists the problems of RDBMSes as possibly deleting all tables while changing a key or being unable to add a column easily. While I don't know about all RDBMSes, I don't know any that could lose all data with anything less than DROP DATABASE.

At the same time, the NoSQL complaints and problems seem to be generally presented, which isn't good. The various NoSQL flavors of databases vary widely and the way you look at a columnar or graph database is much different than a document database. Really, the piece ought to be separated to look at a certain class of NoSQL database compared with RDBMSes.

Jeff Atwood has had quite a bit of success in his career, having been a founder of StackExchange and Discourse. He's a fellow alumnus of the University of Virginia, along with Alexis Ohanian. Both of them have had a higher profile than me, and I admire what they've accomplished. I also think they've both been advocates for the technology industry, helping and advising others on how they can succeed in their own careers.

Jeff has been writing interesting posts about hardware and software for years, but the latest one struck me. It's called Learning on the Battlefield, and it has a lot of the same advice that I recently gave someone. In the post, Jeff notes that approaching your software career is like learning on the battlefield. It's like making weapons and coming up with tactics. You really need to test them on the battlefield.

I ran across an article, titled When to use CHAR, VARCHAR, or VARCHAR(MAX), which struck me as something I never do. I mean, I do use varchar (and nvarchar), but I can't remember the last time I actually created a char column. The article is worth a read, and it sets the stage for you to think about your database design process and the choices you make.

It's Friday, and if you take a few minutes and think about the last few times you've added columns to a table have you used CHAR as a data type? Or do you default to varchar of any size as a general rule?

The cloud for computing is a fascinating structure. I know there are plenty of jokes about the cloud just being someone else's computer, and there are good reasons not to use the cloud. However, there are also lots of good reasons to use the cloud. Whether you choose to embrace it or avoid it, cloud computing is going to be a part of our careers for a long time. The use is growing, and more and more companies are shifting workloads to cloud services.

How that will evolve, especially for data-intensive systems, will be fascinating. One of the interesting changes that seems to be taking places is the growth of database and data stores that fulfill specialized roles for customers. Snowflake might be one of the most well-known examples, but there are plenty more. The number of offerings is growing, and perhaps this is another evolution of how the cloud will integrate into more businesses.

I received a report at SSC of a missing toolbar in the forums. I checked, and sure enough, the toolbar for formatting code and text in responses was missing. I submitted a high-priority ticket, mostly because I hate unformatted code. The site was still usable, but people would be posting stuff that just didn't look good. The developers got to work and had a fix, but it still wasn't right. The wrong toolbar was showing. This was a generic toolbar, not the one that we have had for years (this one). They produced a second fix that contained the right toolbar.

The developers are in and out of the SQL Server Central codebase, working for a few days on open issues, then busy with other work for a week or two. They work in a DevOps style environment, with changes run through a Pull request/peer-review process, then CI, then an automated deployment. They often can make a change and deploy it in hours, or even minutes.
