The first voice is Barb Alberson, the Senior Deputy Director for Policy and Planning at San Joaquin County Public Health Services who shares her insights into the impact of poverty on health outcomes. The second set of voices are Horacio Viramontes IB Spanish Teacher and the Spanish Club Advisor along with his Franklin High Spanish Club Students who share their community service work at the second annual Reinvent South Stockton Coalition Resident Summit. The third voice Benita Ortez, community activist, and grandmother who shared both her and her grandkids experience living in South Stockton as well as her efforts to secure more resources and in turn, provide a safer community for kids and families.

The Summer Success Leadership Academy was co-created in 2010 by Stockton natives Ty-Licia Hooker, and Michael Tubbs. The one-week residential program is free to about 50 minority high school students who learn to design and execute community action plans to address problems facing their communities. The Summer Success Leadership Academy is hosted with the University of the Pacific.

Like the Phoenix Scholars program we discussed with Rebekah Fenton in episode one, the Summer Success Leadership Academy’s mission is to increase access to higher education for underrepresented students. The Summer Success Leadership Academy is part of Michael Tubbs’s work to develop an ecosystem of youth organizing and leadership which ties into both the Stockton Scholars program that we discussed with Lange Luntao in episode five and with the Stockton School Initiative and student outreach with Jasmine Dellafosse in Episode 7.

As was mentioned by Lange Luntao in Episode Five part of the mission of the community group Reinvent South Stockton Coalition created by then-Councilmember Michael Tubbs is to empower its residents to transform their community through improving, education. A big part of improving the education is through engaging the users of the education system the youth. Our voice in this episode is Jasmine Della -ah-fosse who shares her experience working with Michael Tubbs as well as the Reinvent South Stockton Coalition in organizing students to address the crime, safety, recreation, health, and the education systems in South Stockton.

Stockton was home to the largest community of Filipinos outside of the Philippines and they were segregated to a four-block area called Little Manila in downtown Stockton. In this episode, we feature the voice of Dillon Delvo a second-generation Filipino American and co-founder of Little Manila Rising. Dillion and fellow co-founder the late Dr. Dawn Mabalon formed Little Manila Rising to both preserve the history and reclaim the last remaining buildings of Little Manila.

Dillon shares his passion, insights and organizational work around advocacy, education, arts, and culture as part of Little Manila Rising’s efforts to revitalize the Filipina American community in Stockton. Lange Luntao is the Director of the Stockton Scholars and the Executive Director of the Reinvent Stockton Foundation, a charitable organization that aims to expand opportunity and build hope by attracting resources into Stockton and investing in our city's people. A third-generation teacher who was born and raised in Stockton. Lange returned to Stockton in 2012 to work in public service and education - first as the Field Director for the successful campaign to elect Michael Tubbs to the Stockton City Council.

Stockton, California is a city on the rise. Once the foreclosure capital of America and the largest city before Detroit to declare bankruptcy, Stockton is now ranked the second most fiscally solvent city in the nation. But despite this progress, problems persist and the people of Stockton, especially our youth, remain behind the rest of the nation. Fred has worked over twenty-five years with STAND developing over 400 units of affordable housing in South Stockton as well as working with residents and the police department to implement and manage community policing.

To understand the birth of STAND, one needs to understand the history of the “neighborhood” of Fair-view Terrace. The neighborhood is a seventeen-block area of southeast Stockton, consisting of very low to middle income residents, most of who are African-American and Hispanic. Beginning with the ‘crack’ epidemic of the early 1990’s, the entire area became plagued by overt criminal activity and blatant outdoor drug sales. Samuel Nuñez, Executive Director of Fathers & Families of San Joaquin is a state and nationally recognized expert in the field of youth development, violence prevention and community organizing for social change. After experiencing first-hand the trauma of community violence and incarceration, Sammy founded Fathers and Families of San Joaquin to be a catalyst for healing, policy change, and community empowerment. Since then he has mentored and built power with thousands of young people and families from Stockton to Washington, DC working with creativity, persistence and a deep commitment to healing. Sammy has inspired national funders and cross-sector partners to invest in healing and community organizing as a primary tool for community transformation.
