    In This Leadership Episode...

This episode features Steve Winjet, head coach at Straight Blast Gym Edmonton, sharing what it takes to build a culture where people improve through consistency, awareness, and disciplined training.

The conversation highlights how Brazilian Jiu Jitsu develops patience, emotional control, and the ability to stay composed under pressure. Steve explains how a structured approach to training creates steady progress and long term commitment, even when results are not immediate.

Listeners will walk away with a clear understanding of how the right environment shapes growth, how humility shows up in daily practice, and how the lessons learned on the mat carry into real life situations. The focus stays on progress, responsibility, and the mindset required to keep showing up and getting better.

  • Leadership and Stress (The Adaptive Capacity Principle)

Leadership and Stress The Adaptive Capacity Principle.

Adaptive Capacity Principle (ACP) – Simple Outline

    I. What It Is

    • A nervous system-based model of elite performance under stress
    • Built to go beyond the old Yerkes-Dodson law
    • Core idea: You don’t perform based on effort or motivation. You perform based on what your nervous system can regulate.
    • II. The Big Shift

      • Old way: “Try harder” or “feel less anxious”
      • ACP way: Train your inner regulation system (Autonomic Nervous System) instead of pushing through willpower
      • Result: Failure happens long before the “peak” because capacity runs out — not because pressure is too high.
      • III. Old Law vs. New Principle

        • Yerkes-Dodson Law: Fixed upside-down U curve. Assumes everyone can reach the top if they just adjust effort or anxiety.
        • Adaptive Capacity Principle: Dynamic zones. Performance is limited by your current regulation capacity, not by how hard you try.
        • IV. Biological Foundation

          • Rooted in the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
          • Replaces “weak vs. strong” with “regulated vs. dysregulated”
          • Focuses on real physiology (amygdala, prefrontal cortex, vagus nerve, cortisol) instead of mindset or personality.
          • V. The Four Zones of Performance

            1. Low Tolerance
              • Narrow window, super-sensitive stress alarm
              • Fast amygdala firing, quick cortisol dump
              • Feels like everything is overwhelming
              • Regulation Gate (The Growth Point)
                • The “I can work through this” moment
                • Vagus nerve and parasympathetic system kick in
                • Where real growth and neuroplasticity actually happen
                • Adaptive Peak (Flow State)
                  • The earned sweet spot
                  • Balanced nervous system = clear thinking, fast decisions, high output
                  • Not assumed — it’s trained
                  • Overload (Point of No Return)
                    • Full system shutdown
                    • Prefrontal cortex goes offline, survival mode takes over
                    • Only recovery works here — no coaching or pushing through
                    • VI. The Gate That Changes Everything

                      • Coping Activation Layer
                        • Three practical tools: • Breathwork (direct vagus nerve control) • Reframing (lowers perceived threat) • Gradual Exposure (widens your tolerance window over time) Emotional Resilience Point
                        • No coping = early crash
                        • Trained coping = bigger capacity every week
                        •
