  • Feeding a Natural Diet with Ease
I had the pleasure of speaking with Sacha Packer all the way from Sydney, Australia.  She is a New Zealander who lives with a Great Dane and 2 foster failed dogs.  Sacha has played/competed in agility, nose work, conformation, obedience and 2 of her dogs have their Champion Trick titles.  She formed The Balanced Canine when her 13-year-old Great Dane developed degenerative myopathy and no one could help her.  The practice is multi-modality and the main services are Soft tissue, adjustments, fitness & nutrition.  Sacha is an advocate for fresh food, with a special passion for gut health and how that relates to the overall health, behavior and well-being of a dog.
In this episode Sacha is going to help pet parents understand what a natural diet is and that it isn’t actually dangerous or scary. We’ll cover how a natural diet relates to overall health, well-being and better behavior.
What exactly is a natural diet?   Is that the same as a raw diet?
What’s wrong with feeding kibble or canned food?
What do you say when people tell you that feeding natural is scary or that it seems expensive, time consuming and confusing?
What conditions does a natural diet address?
What ingredients would be included in a typical natural meal?
What does a typical nutritional consult look like with you?
    Do you provide recipes?
In addition to natural food, would you recommend also adding additional supplements?
If someone is not ready to go fully natural, what else could they feed?
I found Sacha on the Fresh Food Feeding for Dogs FB group.  That’s a group that she and Brittany Young (also a canine nutritional advisor) manage and it is a great community of people who want to learn more about how to add fresh food to their dog's diet.  And they do stress that kibble feeders are also welcome.

  • How to Educate Your Vet on the Raw Diet
With me today is DeDe Murcer Moffett.  She is the CEO of Raw Dog Food and Company, an online -  wholesale direct to consumer raw pet food distributor.  Her mantra is, “Friends Don’t Let Friends Feed Kibble”.  DeDe is a certified raw and pet health nutritionist who has not only built a business pet parents can trust, but also has a team of top-notch vets and consultants who help educate consumers on how to transition their pets away from processed foods. DeDe's podcast on iTunes “The Raw Dog Food Truth" is heard weekly by concerned pet parents who are looking for real answers and real long-term solutions to their pet’s health!
DeDe, you’ve been feeding raw for over 20 years.  Why do you believe in it so much?
Why are so many veterinarians resistant to feeding raw and advocating that for their patients?
Why aren’t there many research or clinical studies to back up the benefits of feeding raw?
Why did you start the Raw Dog Food and Company?  What makes your products different from other brands on the market?

  • What’s Being Regulated in the Dog Food Industry?
We are thrilled and honored to have Susan Thixton back on the show with us today.  She is a dog and cat food consumer advocate, representing pet owners with the FDA and AAFCO (pet food regulatory authorities), and heads the largest pet food stakeholder organization - Association for Truth in Pet Food. Susan is also the Publisher of the website TruthaboutPetFood.com and creates The List, a list of pet foods that she would trust to give her pets… and for manufacturers who make The List, it’s a big deal because the foods on there were chosen after detailed information and verification of quality of ingredients were provided.  Of course, Susan is super picky on what she feeds her pets.
You might be wondering what states might test for? The answer is not as much as you’d think.
Let’s talk a little bit about label claims and what these companies can get away with.
What information is in a Guaranteed Analysis on the packaging?
    How often are inspections done?
Susan shares how she got into this line of work, what’s involved and how you can support her efforts.
The List – how do you research different dog foods, the ingredients, sourcing and the manufacturer’s practices and how does a manufacturer make the list?

  • Dog Food: There Has to be a Better Way!
Amy Budd is the Founder of Big Bear Pet Company and has been critter crazy her whole life!  Her initial path in college was veterinary medicine but after working in a clinic after obtaining her bachelors and realizing she was the worst combination of Dr. Doolittle and Dr. Hariett, it became obvious that was not the best plan.  Amy came to the pet industry almost 20 years ago somewhat by accident, initially wanting to provide baked treats for horses and dogs.  Her passion grew beyond yummy treats for tail wags and whinnies, into wanting to provide premium nutrition for beloved family members.  As her knowledge base grew about the industry it fueled the fire to provide real, whole food for pets that owners could trust.
During this episode Amy shares what she is seeing in the industry and why she decided to make her own food, going over and above the minimum guidelines.
You have a degree in Animal Science.  How did you "accidentally" get into the pet food business?
What are the pluses of dehydrated food?
    How about raw?
Why are you so particular about your processing?

  • Group Dog Hiking for Happy, Healthy Dogs & a Solution for Leash Reactivity!
What is the difference between walking my dog versus hiking with my dog? That's a great question. If you think about dog walking, it conjures up the picture of people walking their dogs in a typical neighborhood, or probably not that far outside of their neighborhood and walking maybe a half an hour, possibly an hour. Whereas what we do is conveniently pick up our clients’ dogs and we take them up into the mountains, in groups, in our vehicles that hold 12 dogs safely and comfortably. And we take them up to different trails in the mountains. And what we do there is we will hike dogs in nature with all of the fun stuff that goes on in nature.
What goes in to preparing your dog for a hike and what should you take with you?
How do you find good trails to hike on?
What about encountering wildlife on the trail? Should I bring pepper spray?
How can hiking with your dog help with leash reactivity? And we first should probably define what leash reactivity is.
