  • How Darwin’s is Evolving the Pet Food Industry
Welcome Dog Lovers!  Thanks for tuning in.  I am so excited to have our guest Gary Tashjian on the show today.  He is the founder and CEO of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products, which delivers fresh dog and cat food across the US direct to pet owners’ doors. Driven by his passion for helping his own dogs, Gary created Darwin’s to give pet owners convenient access to the best nutrition possible. Now 15 years later, Gary’s passion has never waned, and Darwin’s continues to be a leader in fresh pet food. When Gary isn’t at Darwin’s, he’s spending quality time with his wife and two retrievers, Molly and Maci.
Gary, can you share with us the story of how the company came to be?
What makes your food different from others on the market?
I’ve heard that you prefer to call your product "real" food rather than "raw" food.  Why is that?
I wanted to congratulate you on being included on the Truth About Pet Food’s 2020 List.  For those not familiar, can you share what you had to do to be on that?
What’s your business model?  Where can people find your products?
Why do you believe raw is the best way to feed?
I know that you’ve had warnings in the past from the FDA.  Can you speak to that?
What are your thoughts on salmonella in raw food?  Is there really a health risk and should people be concerned?
Why do you think that Darwin’s has such a loyal following?
Do you encourage your customers to rotate products and proteins?
I know that many people with larger dogs, and/or maybe with more than one dog cannot afford to feed a completely raw diet.  What if someone was to mix Darwin’s raw with kibble?  Is that better than not changing their food at all?
Where do you see the pet food industry going?  Is it getting better and are more dog parents feeding fresh food?
What are you and your team working on now?

  • Got Dog Fur? On Your Clothes? On Your Laundry?
Scott Grillo is the National Sales Manager at FurZapper which is a patent-pending product that was created to provide pet owners with a simple, self-cleaning product that will help keep pet fur off of your laundry.
I thought we’d first just do a quick class on Shedding 101.  Shedding is part of the natural life cycle of hair shafts within the hair follicles. All hair shafts, even our own go through phases of growth and shedding. And these phases affect the rate of hair growth and will vary by breed, age, hormones, environment and overall health of the dog. These factors also contribute to the length and texture of the hair.
So, if you have a dog, you most likely go by the motto, “no outfit is complete without dog hair”.
Scott, tell us about how you came up with the FurZapper
    How does it work?
Why is the FurZapper better than lint rollers?
Does it remove in the washer and dryer?
Is it safe for your skin?
    How long do they last?
Any tips on how to launder most effectively?  Like do fabric softeners or dryer sheets make a difference?
I would assume that these are great for dog parents and groomers as well?  I’m sure they go through a lot of towels in their line of work.
What is your business model?  Where are they sold?
    How does the glove work?
Any other products that you’re developing?
    Any success stories?

  • The Mental Health Crisis in Veterinary Medicine
Welcome dog lovers!  Today we have a very fascinating guest on the show.  Joining me is Josh Vaisman who is a positive psychology practitioner and co-founder of Flourish Veterinary Consulting.  He’s been serving the veterinary industry since 1998 in roles ranging from technician to practice manager to hospital owner.  Pulling from a variety of post-graduate certifications and a masters in applied positive psychology, Josh is now dedicated to helping cultivate environments in which veterinary professionals can thrive.
Josh is going to be sharing with us information about a topic that absolutely shocks me:
The Mental Health Crisis in Veterinary Medicine.  The Struggle is Real, and Hidden.
Josh, you shared with me a statistic that I found hard to believe, “Veterinarians are killing themselves in alarming numbers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found male vets are 2.1 times as likely and female vets 3.5 times as likely to die by suicide compared with the general population.
    What’s going on here?
Is the answer having more vets be specialists instead of having to know everything about different species?
You wrote an article about burnout among veterinarians.  What percentage of vets say that they are currently experiencing burnout?
    How do you define burnout?
Is this happening all over the world or more here in the US?
Do these professionals realize their mental state?  Where can they turn for support and treatment?
And you did a survey of vet techs.  What were the results?
Josh, where can everyone find out more information about you and Flourish Veterinary Consulting?

Here are a few resources that Josh is sharing related to the wellbeing challenges veterinary professionals face:
    · An article that he recently appeared on NPR.
    · An article he wrote on his blog about burnout among veterinary technicians in which he shared the results of an extensive survey he held.
    · A study recently conducted by the CDC in partnership with AVMA about vet suicide rates.
    · A study recently conducted by Merck Animal Health looking at wellbeing among veterinarians around the country.

  • How to Fight Fleas and Ticks Naturally!
I’m so happy to welcome Janine Ling to the show.  She is the founder of kin+kind and started the company with her twin brother Thomas to provide natural and organic solutions to common pet problems. Their mission is to save the world, one itchy pet at a time.
We are just ITCHING to know what you have to say, so let’s get right into it.  Fleas and ticks are not only a nuisance, but they can also transmit deadly diseases to you and your dog.
Janine, we all know that there are plenty of anti- flea and tick treatments for pets on the market, but many contain so many harsh chemicals.  What are your thoughts on that?
There are collars, dips, sprays, shampoos, powders and topical solutions and I know that Americans spend millions of dollars on products every year and unwittingly we’re poisoning ourselves and our dogs.
Can you share with us why these products full of chemicals are so dangerous?
Why are Most Flea-Control Products Are Dangerous?
When you bathe your pet after a topical treatment, the chemical gets washed down the drain to wastewater treatment facilities where, it has been shown, nearly 100 percent of it makes it through the filtration process and gets dumped into our streams, rivers and oceans.
It’s a fact that Skin condition is an indicator of a dog’s overall health and an important factor in flea and tick control. Does that start with a healthy diet?
Why did you start the company?
What makes your products different from others on the market?  Even the natural ones?
What are the ingredients in your flea and tick products and why do they work?
What are some preventative measures that we can take to keep fleas and ticks at bay?
How do you decide which ingredients to use in your products?
In addition to the natural flea and tick prevention products, what else do you offer?
Are you currently working on any new products?
    What is the kin+kind promise?
Janine, where can everyone find out more information about you and kin+kind?

  • The Scared Rescue Dog Test
Welcome Dog Lovers!  I am honored to have Steve Brown on the show today.  He is a true icon in the dog food industry.  Steve is a nutritional researcher, he was the founder and formulator of the first AAFCO compliant commercially available raw-food diet in the US, author of 2 top-selling canine nutrition books, a formulation consultant to some of the best-selling and most nutritious meat-based canine diets and Steve is a frequent lecturer/speaker at veterinary and dog-health related conferences.  Steve has made a lot of contributions to the pet food industry and continues to make an impact on the health of our dogs.
Steve, why don’t you tell us about this study and why you are so passionate about it?
And this is the first study linked to your Canine Healthy Soil Project.  Please tell us more.
How did you learn about this hypothesis?
Where do you find healthy soil?
So regenerative farms have healthy soil.  What exactly is regenerative agriculture?
And you suggest that early exposure is best?  So, with puppies?
    When will your testing begin?
How is healthy soil actually added to a dog’s food?  How much is given?
    Do they like the taste?
If any of the listeners have a scared rescue and want to participate, how do they enroll in the study?
What should they expect from being involved?
Steve, where can everyone find out more information about you, the study and the Canine Healthy Soil Project?

  • The 5 Underlying Causes of Cancer in Dogs
Aren’t we lucky to have Dr Judy Jasek back on the show again!?  Dr. Judy is a holistic veterinarian who’s specialty is in caring for cancer patients.  Using the knowledge gained in her 30+ years of practicing, Dr Judy has developed a unique whole-body approach to both treating and preventing disease.  She looks at the whole animal, and supports the natural healing ability of the body with proper nutrition, detoxification, and eliminating the underlying causes of disease.  She then uses tools such as ozone, herbs, CBD, essential oils, and whole food supplements to optimize the health of the body and help it to eliminate the disease.
Her personal pets and teachers are Wylie and C-Jay, two Chihuahuas who are always in her shadow.
Before we start, I wanted to share the latest statistics regarding canine cancer:
An estimated 6 million dogs will be diagnosed with cancer this year. ... According to The Veterinary Cancer Society, cancer is the leading cause of death in 47% of dogs, especially dogs over age ten. Dogs get cancer at about the same rate as humans
And Dr. Judy we were together last night and I think that you mentioned that the latest stat that you’ve heard is that 2 out of 3 dogs will get cancer?  Is that right?
So, why don’t we start with you telling us about the 5 underlying causes of cancer in dogs
What are some of the most common cancers in dogs?
Are there diagnostic tests or exams that should be done regularly to try to detect cancer in dogs?
Are some types of cancers more treatable than others?
What does an oncologist do that my own local vet can’t do?

I want to thank all of the dog lovers tuning in today.   I’d like to introduce someone who is an absolute genius!  Have you ever seen a product and thought, I wish that I would have thought of that?  I can’t wait to chat with Chelsea Brownridge who is the co-founder and CEO of DogSpot. She is a dog mom to two rescues, Winston and Pepita. She started DogSpot after realizing how many places wouldn't allow pets inside and because she didn't like seeing dogs tied up outside of grocery stores and coffee shops. She wanted a way to bring her dogs on more walks around the city where she lives, Brooklyn, and to have a safe place for them to hang out for a few minutes if she had to go inside a store that doesn't allow dogs inside.
Can you start off by sharing what exactly is the DogSpot and how did you start the company?
What are all of the awesome features of the DogSpot and what problems does it solve?
How long did it take you to get from concept to where you are today?
How do most dogs react when being placed in a DogSpot?  Do they adjust quickly?
How does membership work and what is the cost?
What is the ave time that a dog would stay in the DogSpot?
What are the benefits to store owners and can you share some statistics around that?
What has been your biggest challenge with this product/service?
How many DogSpots are available for use?
If our listeners want to see if there are any DogSpots near them, where do they go for that info?
And what if they’d like to see about getting a DogSpot in their city?
Any plans on expanding outside of the US?

  • Study Reveals Surprising Dog Parenting Trends
Welcome all dog lovers!  Today’s topic was brought to our attention via one of our listeners.  Thanks to Erika Beerbower for the heads up about the survey!
My guest today is Adrian Tennant, Vice President of Insights at Bigeye, an advertising agency based in Orlando, Florida. Adrian is originally from the UK and has worked in advertising for almost three decades. He leads Bigeye's research team, which recently published the 2019 US Pet Industry Study, providing a snapshot of pet owners' purchasing behaviors and attitudes about pet-related products and services. Adrian is also pet parent: he has two four-year-old Maine Coon cats who both think they're dogs!
Today Adrian is going to share with us the results obtained from their recent 2019 US Pet Industry Study, which gives us insights into the buying habits and attitudes of owners of domestic pets.  Of course, that includes all of us that have dogs.
They collected the data for this primary research in July and August of 2019 from a sample of 784 adults aged 25 to 55 located across the United States.
We’ll start off by saying that 75% of respondents in the study owned dogs.  Yay dog owners!
Adrian, can you share with us why your agency conducted the study.
Ninety-five percent of owners consider pets a member of their family;  how do you think that influences our buying behaviors when shopping for our dogs?
Adrian, what are we purchasing for our dogs?
And where are dog owners shown to shop?
And what about services?  What are the stats on services purchased for our dogs?
What did you find out about owners and subscription services?
I found this stat to be surprising:  one-third of all pet owners (36%) at least sometimes purchase costumes for their pets.  Which demographic falls into this majority?
Let’s talk about your findings as they relate to CBD products.
Adrian, how do owners decide what to feed their dogs?
What is the average spend on our dogs?
Were there any surprises in the results?
