  • The Price of Poop!
Dylan Ojeda is the founder and POO (primary operating officer) of Dook, a subscription to compostable dog poop bags based in California.  Dook was launched in 2019 with his sister, Nina, after a long conversation about the environmental impact of her small doggos.  After searching for eco-friendly options, they realized that the term “biodegradable” wasn’t regulated, so they found 100% plastic-free options and decided to create their own. Dook bags are made and packaged using 0% fossil fuels, eco-friendly (veggie) dye and no plastic wrapping.
Yes, we’re going to talk about dog poop and I want to set the stage. One of my pet peeves is watching someone not pick up after their dog…
    ·       Dogs in the U.S. produce 10.6 million tons of poop each year. The average dog deposits about ¾ pounds of dog poop daily, which adds up to 270 pounds of poop a year.
    ·       In some cities, dog poop is the 3rd or 4th most significant cause of water pollution.
Dylan, this is a serious issue!  What do you tell people who say, I pick up after my dog and even reuse the plastic grocery bags.  That’s practical and cost-effective isn’t it?
    Why did you start Dook?
What is the difference between compostable, biodegradable and recyclable?
Most biodegradable bags on the market are primarily made of petroleum or corn. Dook bags are 100% compostable and completely plastic free.  What are they made out of?
How long does it take for a Dook bag to break down?
I know that many companies claim to have bags that are earth-friendly or biodegradable, but they don’t actually break down within a year, and some never degrade at all.  How are they able to get away with marketing false claims?
Dylan, what makes your bags different?
Can you tell us about your business model?
I understand that most scientifically-proven biodegradable plastics won’t degrade in a landfill because of compression and lack of oxygen or “mummification” of garbage.  What’s the best way to get the best results from earth-friendly poop bags and to dispose of them correctly?
How many bags would the average dog go through in a day?
How do you educate people to be more responsible dog owners and to pay a little more for truly biodegradable bags vs conventional bags?
    How about dog-waste-only composting bins?
And our friends at Dook want to share an amazing offer with our Wag Out Loud Community.  Use code WOL when ordering off of their site and get 25% off of your first purchase.

  • End Separation Anxiety Forever!
Hello Dog Lovers!  Thanks for tuning in!  I’m excited to chat with our guest today, Doug Poynter, who has been helping dogs and training people for over 25 years. In his experience almost all Dog Behavior Problems can be traced back to a human/owner issue.  Doug is passionate about teaching people the humane, gentle methods he uses that actually work to change their dogs’ behavior!
Doug, Separation Anxiety is a pretty common issue right?
What are some of the signs of separation anxiety?
Do puppies get separation anxiety the same as dogs that are adopted later in life?
I would have to think that for owners that don’t have the time, money or patience to work with an afflicted dog, that they just give the dog up for adoption or maybe even worse…like euthanizing?
Can you explain why punishment is ineffective, inappropriate, and will only exacerbate the behavior?
What’s the difference btw distress vs anxiety?
And is it true that there is a difference btw isolation and separation?
So, how can you condition a dog to accept being left alone?
Do relaxants such as Rescue Remedy, CBD or aromatherapy help?
What’s the time limit that a dog can be left alone?
SPECIAL OFFER: For the first 11 listeners to sign up for Doug’s Separation Anxiety Course, you get the video course + 30 min phone or video conference consult with Doug for $37 total (a $197 value)

  • Glyphosate, GMOs & DCM...Oh My! Part 2
Welcome Dog Lovers!  Dr. Chris Bessent is someone that I couldn’t wait to have on the show and here she is!  Dr. Bessent has over thirty years of experience in veterinary medicine, including certificates in veterinary acupuncture, chiropractic, and Chinese herbology as well as a master’s degree in acupuncture & oriental medicine. With degrees in veterinary medicine, nutrition & animal science, she founded The Simple Food Project, formulating freeze-dried recipes for pets from nothing but whole foods.
Currently, she divides her time between The Simple Food Project and Herbsmith, a manufacturer of premium quality supplements for dogs and cats. Both are owned and operated out of her facilities in southeastern Wisconsin.
Dr. Bessent, why don’t we start with, what is Glyphosate?
Can you give us a little history on this toxin, when it came to be.
I heard you mention that most crops get sprayed more than once and glyphosate is actually sprayed again to help the entire crop mature at the same time?
And it concentrates in plants with seeds?
In 2010, the World Health Organization categorized glyphosate as a “probable carcinogen”. Why does the US continue to spray glyphosate on crops?
What foods are most likely to be contaminated?
Aren’t these the same ingredients found in most commercial pet foods?
Can you briefly explain GMO foods and what are the most prominent GMO foods?
And it’s hard to wash off of the foods right?
You suggest a link with some of the most common diseases and glyphosate.
Why are our dogs at such risk?
How do we Minimize The Effects On our dogs?
And you believe that glyphosate and GMOs are directly linked to the DCM cases we’re seeing?  Can you share that with us?
I understand that there is a Glyphosate Pet Test?

  • The Clean Pet Food Revolution
Greetings Dog Lovers!  I’m so excited about today’s show.  We have Dr. Ernie Ward with us and he’s an internationally recognized veterinarian known for his work in the areas of general small animal practice, life extension and longevity, practice management and leadership, long-term medication monitoring, special needs of senior dogs and cats and pet obesity. Dr. Ward is the Chief Veterinary Officer and co-founder of Wild Earth, a plant-based sustainable pet food company, and the Executive Director of Education for VerticalVet. He has authored three books, been a frequent guest on television programs and served as the resident veterinarian for the “Rachael Ray Show” from 2007 until 2014. Dr. Ward also authors "The Vet Is In", a monthly column for Dogster Magazine, was named "Speaker of the Year" for the two largest veterinary conferences in the world (VMX and WVC), the "2018 Veterinary Journalist of the Year" by the New York Pet Fashion Show,  and is a highly sought after veterinary media expert.
Dr. Ward, why did you write this book?
How long did it take to do the research, gather the science and actually write it?
So, it’s long been known that some of the meat found in pet foods (especially low-cost products) comes from animals that are known as “four D”: dead, dying, diseased, or disabled animals unfit for human consumption.  What exactly is factory farming?
Can you share some of the statistics concerning the pet food industry?
And you say that pet food is also a major cause of climate change?  How so?
    What is the solution?
You say that you have some exciting plant-based research and that dogs should not be fed an ancestral diet.
Dogs originally were carnivores, but we’ve evolved them to be omnivores?
What about their teeth?  For example, cows have broad, flat teeth that are ideal for grinding down plant matter and dogs have narrow pointy teeth that are ideal for cutting into meat.
Why do you think that plant-based is healthier for most pets?
Are any other nutrients that do need to be supplemented?
What are the best non-meat high quality plant proteins?
Do you have any cautions against home-prepared plant-based diets?  Are some inadequate and unbalanced?
You’ve co-founded the plant-based pet food company Wild Earth, makers of the world’s first high-protein plant-based dog food.  Can you share more about the products?
Why is Wild Earth dog food better than other vegan recipes?
Since it’s a kibble, do you have a high heat process like the regularly extruded kibble?  Any carcinogens?
What does the future hold for the pet food industry?

  • Fresh Feeding & Our Dog’s Microbiome
Welcome all dog lovers!  Are you ready to learn something new today?  With us are TWO very special guests.  We are honored to have Alex Jarrel (Co-founder and Chief Experience Officer) and Dr. Ryan Honaker (Director of Microbiology) at NomNom, one of the leading direct to consumer pet food brands.  Alex started the company to fuel her passion for educating pet parents about the power of pet nutrition and portion control.  Dr. Honaker is an expert in microbiome manipulation, infection therapeutics and microbial community profiling.  He leads Nom Nom’s research and development team as they are currently analyzing the gut microbiome of dogs and cats through DNA sequencing techniques.
Alex, let’s start with you.  Can you share with us why you started NomNom?  What did you see as lacking in the pet food industry?
What makes your products different from others?
Why did you decide to offer fresh food vs processed?
I’d love to quickly share my experience with the NomNom products.
Dr. Honaker, let’s talk about our dog’s microbiome health.  When we think of bacteria a lot of times our minds go to thinking that’s a bad thing.  What exactly is the microbiome?
I’ve heard the microbiome referred to as the “forgotten organ”.  Why is that?
What functions does the microbiome support?
Do you want to talk about Dysbiosis and its causes?
Any last word on diet and the microbiome?
Could one of you share info about your Insights program?
Are you working on any new products right now?

  • Forget Something When Out With Your Dog(s)?
Hello dog lovers!  I can’t wait to bring on today’s guest Marg Shadid.  As with many dog owners, Marg had to juggle family, career and loving care for her 4-legged family members. After many, many years of striving for a responsible, fun time with her dogs…it finally dawned on her, keep it simple and efficient, hence the Let’s Go Design Dog Walking Utility Jacket.
Well, I think I’m the typical dog owner who walks their dogs every day.  I of course want to be warm and comfortable on the daily walks, but I also need to make sure I have everything I need like my phone, tissues, treats and poop bags.  I know other people who bring an extra leash and maybe a tennis ball.  That’s a lot of stuff!
Marg, you have a solution right?
I bought my jacket at a dog show over 10 years ago and absolutely love it!  I always get compliments and really love the versatility.
How did the concept of the jacket come to be?
    Why name it K-Roscoe?
Can you go through all of the features?
And you have several patents right?
    How do you wash it?
Are they for both men and women and what sizes do you carry?
    What colors are available?
What is your business model?  Where are the jackets sold?
Any plans for any additional products in the future?
You also sell to groups/organizations as well, right?

  • Where You Buy Your Dog Food Matters
Hello everyone!  Thanks for being here and for wanting to learn more about keeping your dog healthy and happy.  I’m so excited about today’s guest.  With us is Chelsea Kent who co- founded Hero's Pets in Littleton, CO in 2007. She is a regulatory specialist, attends all AAFCO (American Association of Feed Control Officials) meetings and consults for multiple non-profits, manufacturers, retailers and consumers. She also authors educational articles on a variety of veterinary and social platforms.
If you have not yet listened to Chelsea’s previous episode on The Ins and Outs of the Dog Food Landscape, I highly encourage you to check that out.  Lots of great information!
Chelsea, as an owner of a boutique pet store, I’d love to get your opinion on the various types of retailers that carry dog food:  Boutique vs Big Box vs Grocery Stores.
If someone was to call a manufacturer directly, to inquire about their products, do you have examples of certain questions they should ask?
Can you briefly touch on manufacturer marketing strategies and labeling terms (such as "premium”)?
What other misleading terms do manufacturers use?
Chelsea can you share with us how Hero’s Pets came to be?
What makes your store different from others?
What questions should we be asking our local retailer about the food they carry?
In closing, what is the one thing that you advise dog parents on regarding how to choose the right food?
